Should we grant Course Credit from AP Scores? Spirit of Credit for Prior Learning
2:00pm-3:00pm
Via Zoom- Passcode: 277213 - Tina Akers-Porter & Tina Giron
What does an AP test score entail, and how do students earn credit for their high
school AP courses? The AP Exam score indicates the level of qualification for college
credit and placement. However, it is important to note that each college has its own
policies regarding the specific scores required for credit or placement. In the case
of MJC, the college generally does not grant AP credit for individual courses. This
leads us to the question of why. Let's delve into a discussion about high school AP
tests, the credit-granting practices of nearby colleges and universities, and explore
alternative approaches that could enhance individual and collective student success
through AP test scores here at MJC.
MJC Physical Therapy Assistant Program
2:00pm-3:00pm
Via Zoom or MPE 110, East Campus - Jamie DeRollo, Letitia Senechal, Derek Madden
Presentation will be on the special project faculty worked on during the summer, looking
into the potential for MJC to offer a Physical Therapy Assistant Program at MJC.
California’s Central Valley’s population over the age of 65 is expected to increase
from roughly 500,000 to over 1.2 million in the next 20 years. This age group will be the fastest
growing segment in every county of the region (Allied Health Regional Workforce Analysis).
This over65 population will represent more than half the total population in every
county, with many of these people needing some form of physical and occupational therapy
to remain in healthy lifestyles.
Demand for physical therapy is also projected to increase due to implementation of
the Affordable Care Act. This health care initiative will increase the number of people
with coverage for physical therapy. Additional sources of demand will come from victims of the over
11 million national automobile accidents each year, with California being the state with
the highest number of annual auto accidents (US Census Bureau, 2012).
Forbes has recently listed Modesto as having approx 15% unemployment as a major factor reducing quality of life in this city. National average income for PTAs is $25.15
per hour, and $52.320 annual, which exceeds the living wage of $15.00 per hour on which an individual
can subsist (Department of Labor). In home care and other situations, PTA currently earn
an average of $29.00 hourly, $60,730 annual

There is a plethora of perspectives on Chat GPT in higher education and the best practices
regarding implementation (or not) of Chat GPT in the social sciences, humanities,
and STEM. Does Chat GPT make obsolete the long research paper? Does it replace the
hard work of writing with simply editing what Chat GPT writes for the student? Is
Turnitin dependable for Chat GPT detection? Should instructors embrace Chat GPT to
improve the quality of student writing, research, or in anticipation of its ubiquity
by employers? This panel will feature MJC instructors from Social Sciences, Humanities,
English, and SME and will begin with a brief overview of the disparate positions of
Chat GPT in the classroom, a poll of participants’ views on Chat GPT, followed by
each panelist briefly discussing, with examples, how they plan to address Chat GPT

Articulation: What it is and Why it Matters
9:00am - 10:00am
Via Zoom - Letitia Senechal
"Transferable" community college courses are often modeled after the same courses
offered at four-year institutions. However, even an identical community college course
outline is not guaranteed to be accepted by a transfer institution in the way that
we might expect, which can lead to setbacks and unexpected hurdles for students after
transfer.
Articulation is the robust process by which California community college courses are
deemed "comparable" to courses offered at four year institutions. In this session,
we will explain the various types of articulation, and provide tools to help you ensure
your course outline has the most transfer value for your students.
