Proposing an Independent Activity (External Training)
Note: The VRC Professional Development system has a two-phase approval process for Independent Proposals (External Trainings). The first is the initial approval by the dean confirming that it meets Title 5 guidelines and the second is the completion approval. Please keep proposed hours to 1/2 hour increments.

Flex Obligation Hours
Full-Time Faculty Members
All Full-Time Faculty members have a base obligation of 28 hours. In addition, there is an obligation associated with full-term overload assignements. Full-term overload assignments have a flex obligation of 1/2 the hours taught per week. For example, a three unit lecture class has an obligation of 1.5 hours for each semester it is taught.
Faculty members on sabbatical, and those who are using banked leave to cover part
of their load, do not have a flex obligation for the time associated with those leaves.
Contact Kelly Addington at (209) 575-6233 if you have questions.
Part-Time Faculty Members
Part-Time Faculty Members have a flex obligation of 1/2 the hours taught per week. For example, a three unit lecture class has an obligation of 1.5 hours for each semester it is taught.
Only full-term courses (16 week) have a flex obligation associated with the load. Short term sections do not have a flex obligation, however all Full-Time Faculty members have a base obligation of 28 hours regardless of the length of the sections assigned.
Only Fall and Spring term sections have a flex obligation. There is no flex obligation for summer sections.
