Friday's Keynote Speakers
Dr. Jennifer Taylor-Mendoza Dr. Jeremiah J. Sims
Minding the Obligation Gap in Community Colleges and Beyond
Our keynote presenters are Jennifer Taylor-Mendoza, a co-author of Minding the Obligation Gap in Community Colleges and Beyond: Theory and Practice in
Achieving Educational Equity and Jeremiah J. Sims, author of Revolutionary STEM Education: Critical-Reality Pedagogy and Social Justice in STEM
for Black Males (Peter Lang, 2018). They will contextualize MJC's equity work in terms of the theories and practices
discussed in their books. A series of brown bag lunches are scheduled throughout the
Fall semester where co-hosts from Academic Senate and the Office of Instruction will
facilitate discussion to unpack the concepts, and make action plans to better serve
our students. MJC faculty and staff members will receive a copy of Taylor-Mendoza's
book for their own professional development. Help celebrate our Centennial Year as
we continue our work to embrace excellence and equity at Modesto Junior College.
Dr. Jeremiah J. Sims, inaugural Director of Equity for the College of San Mateo, was born in Oakland and raised in Richmond, California. Because of his own life experiences, Jeremiah has devoted his career to the realization of educational equity for hyper-marginalized students. Jeremiah is an alumnus of the University of California, Berkeley where he earned a B.A. in rhetoric, with honors, as well as an M.A. and Ph.D. in education. Jeremiah's work, chronicled in his first book, Revolutionary STEM Education: Critical-Reality Pedagogy and Social Justice in STEM for Black Males (Peter Lang, 2018), details his experiences as an educator working toward a revolutionary, paradigm shift in the STEM education of and for Black boys.
Jennifer Taylor-Mendoza is President of College of San Mateo (California), with over twenty years of higher education experience. Dr. Taylor-Mendoza is continually inspired by the brilliance, power, and endless potential of community college students. Her research focuses on the intrinsic resiliency of students of color and institutional approaches to addressing systemic, structural inequities. She holds a B.A. in psychology from California State University, Los Angeles, an M.S. in counseling from California State University, Northridge, and a Ph.D. in education from Claremont Graduate University.

out is with Canvas Studio, Canvas’s very own “YouTube” like interface. With Canvas
Studio, you can track how much of your assigned video each student has viewed. You
can also embed quiz questions as a way of giving students points for watching. With
Canvas Studio, you can use your own videos or those you find on YouTube. In this workshop,
I will introduce you to this powerful tool so you can use it in your own courses.

Synchronous, Remote Online Teaching: What Have We Learned?
Via Zoom - Mike Smedshammer and Ashli Bumgardner
10:30am-11:30am
We did not know a lot about Zoom, let alone Zoom teaching, when we abruptly moved
fully online in March, 2020. With two-and-a-half semesters of experience in synchronous
teaching, we can share more about what works and what doesn’t.
Instructional Designer Ashli Bumgarder participated in @ONE’s new “Synchronous Online
Teaching” course and will highlight what she learned. There will be plenty of time
also for MJC faculty to use Zoom breakout rooms to share what has worked well for
them. Together, we will create a Google Doc of tips worth trying in your next synchronous
course.
