English
English
Majoring or minoring in English is the right choice for those who love to read, write, interpret, and create. English courses are designed to give students the skills employers say they need most in their workforce: the ability to read with comprehension and critical judgment, to communicate accurately and effectively both orally and in writing, to think logically, to do research and organize materials, and to interpret and appreciate literature. In addition to a pre-collegiate composition course (English 45) and transfer-level courses (English 100, 101, 102, and 103), the English program includes survey courses in English, American and world literature; introductory genre courses in poetry, fiction, and drama; and a number of topical courses such as Shakespeare, Bible as literature, ethnic literatures, folklore, and children's literature.
Our Goal and Mission
We are dedicated to creating an inspiring learning environment and transforming lives. We provide a dynamic, innovative, educational atmosphere and facilitate learning through the development of intellect, creativity, character, and abilities that shape students into thoughtful, culturally aware, engaged citizens. We encourage students to improve their writing and verbal skills to develop a better understanding of themselves, their own culture, and the cultures and languages of other non-English speaking peoples. Helping you build a better life is our objective.
Benefits
English courses are designed to give proficiency in skills that are highly regarded by society: the ability to read with comprehension and critical judgment, to do research and organize materials, to think logically, to interpret and appreciate literature, and to communicate accurately and effectively both orally and in writing. The English major is a doorway to discover who you are and what you want to do.
Career Options
The English major can lead to a career in teaching as well as in professional fields such as law, technical writing, grant writing, marketing, advertising, public relations, human resources, and software development. The English minor is often encouraged for pre-med majors and students pursuing careers in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
