2023 Scholarship Recipients
The Latina Leadership Network of the California Community Colleges has as a goal to empower Latina women through their educational and professional journeys by creating a space for sharing high impact practices addressing equity, diversity, and social justice issues faced by the Latinx community.
Every year, the MJC Chapter of the Latina Leadership Network awards scholarships in an effort to help students achieve their goals. This year, we awarded four $500 scholarships.
This year's award ceremony was hosted in the Great Valley Museum. Thank you to the Great Valley Museum as well as our wonderful scholarship coordinator, Jocelyne Lopez.
Alexis Diaz
My name is Alexis Diaz and I am a history major. I strive to be a lifelong learner.
A challenge that I have implemented in my daily life is to try to learn one thing every day.
I plan to pursue my academic career and eventually acquire a PhD. I would love to work in education at a collegiate level.
I would especially like to thank my parents, as I would not be so motivated to learn if it were not for them.
Maris Prado
My name is Maris Prado, and I'm from French Camp, California. I'm currently in the process of working towards a degree in animal science for transfer and agriculture science. Here at Modesto Junior College, I'm heavily involved within our Ag Department in the animal science club, as an Agriculture Ambassador, on the livestock judging team, the MANRRS club as well as serve as the Young Farmers Reporter.
I plan to transfer to Fresno State in the fall and partake in animal unit internships, join their ambassador team and their Jordan of college ACRS 21 Program. I ultimately aspire to be an Agriculture Educator to teach young people the importance agriculture plays in their life.
The Agricultural industry has given my family and I opportunities of a better life that would not be possible without its harvest. I plan to forever advocate on behalf of the 2% of producers that feed 1 00% of the population.
In addition, I hope to inspire the next generation of agriculturalists in their leadership skills, fueling a passion for the agricultural industry in them as well.
Marie Daphnee Raymond
My name is Marie Daphnee Raymond. I am from the Caribbean, precisely from Haiti. This is my third semester at MJC. Upon completing my prerequisites courses, I will be applying for the nursing program.
Though I already hold a bachelor's degree in business administration and worked in the administration field for several years, last summer I decided to enroll at MJC to pursue a future career in nursing. Part of me sees nursing as an opportunity to make a difference in the life of others by providing compassionate care that can help improve their quality of life.
I have always wanted to work in the medical field but after completing high school I did not have the opportunity and the resources to pursue a career in the healthcare field. I ended up pursuing another career path. My parents always valued education and encouraged me to go further in my studies. That is why I believe that it is never too late to achieve what one really wants. Thus, I decided to go back to school. I am excited for what the future holds and I am working hard towards achieving my goal.
Jose Miguel Munoz
My name is Jose Miguel Munoz, I am a 24 year old young man from Nicaragua trying to make the most of the opportunities that I have. I have a major in civil engineering and I plan to transfer to CSU Sacramento or CSU Fresno by fall 2024.
Construction is one of the most fascinating and important fields that we have as a society. Civil engineers have the responsibility to perform their job properly in order to ensure people's lives when a natural disaster occurs.
After I graduate, one of my biggest goals is to become one of those great civil engineers in order to assist the development of our society.
