In Solidarity with our Afghan Students, Staff, and Community
I am devastated to learn about the traumatic events currently taking place in Afghanistan, affecting millions of Afghan families around the globe. The emerging scenarios from Kabul Airport, the sheer desperation of fellow human beings, and the fear unleashed by the recent developments are heartbreaking, to say the least. The escalating violence is putting civilian lives in jeopardy. No one should be deprived of basic human rights as is happening in Afghanistan currently.
A significant part of our community, including students, staff, and community members both at MJC and in Modesto, have family ties and connections to Afghanistan. I want to let those who are being affected by these events know that we are here to support them in any way we can. Please join me at the Afghan Town Hall on Thursday, August 19 at 6 pm to gain a deeper understanding of the current crisis, the depth of its effects on Afghan students, staff, and families and most importantly how we, as a campus community, can provide support and comfort to those who are experiencing the horror and uncertainty of this tragedy. Additional information on the Afghan Town Hall and current campus resources for Afghan students can be found at the link here: https://www.mjc.edu/instruction/litlang/esl/afghan_advocacy.php. If you need help and are unsure who to contact, please communicate with me directly. If any of you are willing to volunteer to support our Afghan students, staff, and families, please let me know.
Let humanity win! In solidarity,
