Theater Music and Dance Department presents Shrek
The Modesto Junior College Theater, Music and Dance Departments present Shrek The Musical running March 27, 28 at 7 p.m., April 3 and 4 at 7pm and April 5 at 2 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center on East Campus, 435 College Avenue, Modesto.
Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek The Musical is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure, featuring all new songs from Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie; Caroline, or Change) and a sidesplitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage and proves there's more to the story than meets the ears.
"Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek...." And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand... and his name is Shrek.
Shrek presents a treasure trove of creative opportunities, including costumes, sets, puppets (there is a fire-breathing dragon after all) and more! Irreverently fun for the whole family, Shrek proves that beauty is truly in the eye of the ogre.
Director Lynette Borrelli-Glidewell, Musical Director Cathryn Tortell and Choreographer Kim T. Davis all agree that Modesto Junior College will put its own unique spin on this fractured fairy tale; it will be silly and funny, but at the heart of the show is finding the hero in us all. The creative team has produced uniquely original designs for scenery (Ty Helton), costumes (Mary Reilly), and lights (Kevin Saunders).
The cast features Shane Meyers as Shrek, Chrissie Ford as Fiona, Alex Alansalon as Donkey, Daniel Snell as Lord Farquaad as well as Letitia Senechal, Emily Hudson, Jacynda Harp, Jesse Garcia, Michael Ruiz, Sam Whitler, Pablo Hernandez, Avery Tobin, Corrine Cortez, Zachery ‘Ziggy’ Garcia, Wesley Vasquez, Russell Miller, Emily Parsons, Christian Conrad, Kyle Holman, Juan Manriquez, Lyla Glidewell, Zoey Scott, Camden Smith, Jacob Cruz, Madi Vasquez, Chentelle De La Torre, Hector Molina, Airyanna Hardy and Merrissa Brambila.
Shrek The Musical was nominated for seven Tony Awards in 2009 (including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Orchestrations), winning the Tony for Best Costume Design. It also received 12 Drama Desk Award nominations winning Outstanding Actor in a Musical, Outstanding Set Design, and Outstanding Costume Design. Shrek also won the Grammy award for Best Musical Show Album. The London production also was nominated for Best New Musical, Best Actor, and Best Costume Design.
