Family science presentation on “Our Place in the Cosmos” offered at MJC
The Modesto Area Partners in Science (MAPS) is offering a family science presentation (best for 5th grade and older) entitled “Our Place in the Cosmos” by Puragra (Raja) GuhaThakurta, Ph.D., Professor at University of California, Santa Cruz and Lick Observatory, and TEDx speaker. The presentation is dedicated to the memory of Stephen Hawking. The science event is Friday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center on Modesto Junior College’s East Campus, 435 College Avenue, Modesto. Both the program and parking are free.
During the science lecture, Dr. GuhaThakurta will use the latest amazing astronomical images, animations and videos to illustrate how the very material that human beings and other life forms are made of was once synthesized inside the Sun's ancestral stars.
The Milky Way galaxy and other galaxies like it serve as chemical recycling plants and are responsible for the richness and complexity of the Periodic Table of elements. The discussion will include the lives and times of galaxies – galaxy cannibalism and mergers, star formation, and the growth and evolution of galaxies from the tiniest ripples in the fabric of the early Universe.
MAPS programs are made possible by contributions from Modesto Junior College, Associated Students of MJC, MJC Foundation, Great Valley Museum, Stanislaus County Office of Education and Modesto Teachers Association.
