TEDx speaker and expert in treatment of substance abuse to speak at MJC
The Human Services Program at Modesto Junior College is sponsoring a presentation by BJ Davis, Psy.D, entitled "Why We Do What We Do: Choice Theory, A New Psychology of Personal Freedom" on Wednesday, April 11, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Forum 102 on East Campus, 435 College Avenue, Modesto.
A renowned author, professor, and TEDx Sacramento speaker, Dr. Davis is the first presenter in a two-part series titled “An Evening of Brilliance and Insight.” The public is invited to participate in this free event.
Dr. Davis is an advocate for challenging some of the long held myths about what works in substance abuse and offender re-entry programs and is active in conducting research that focuses on treatment effectiveness and outcomes. He often shares his story of hope and triumph that was made famous with his Sacramento TEDx talk that went viral.
He is the Executive Director of Strategies for Change Substance Abuse and Co-occurring Mental Health Treatment Agency, and an adjunct professor in the Forensic and Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program at Alliant International University. He is also the author of the 2009 DVD “What is Recovery? A Quality of Life Perspective.”
Dr. Davis serves as a consultant to the Sacramento Aids Housing Alliance, and is the past Vice Chair of the Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC) Certification Board. In addition to a doctorate in psychology and drug and alcohol certification, he has a dual B.A. in philosophy and religion, a Master of Arts in psychology, and a Master of Science in community counseling.
In 2016, Dr. Davis received a governor’s appointment to the State Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and in December 2017, he received the Harold E. Cole Award for Outstanding Contribution in the field of alcohol and other drug abuse outreach, prevention and treatment by the Sacramento County Alcohol and Drug Advisory Board.
