MJC is the first location for U.S. Drone Soccer in CA
This month, Modesto Junior College (MJC) Community Lifelong Learning Division launched
a U.S. Drone Soccer summer camp! MJC is the first location for the new U.S. Drone
Soccer program in California and it may be one of the coolest sports in the world.
Drone Soccer gives kids ages 12 and up their first experience in engineering and aviation,
creating a pathway for aerospace careers. MJC Community Lifelong Learning has partnered
with Modesto City Schools (MCS) to provide this opportunity to junior high students
through MJC’s Camps for Kids/Teens. During the
week-long camp students build and program their own drone on MJC’s West Campus in
Modesto. The week culminates in a safe, fast-paced game of Drone soccer- picture a
floating soccer game with the players controlling everything from the sidelines. Upon
completion of the camp all students become participants of the U.S. Drone Soccer Team.
Drone Soccer was first invented in South Korea and is now an official international
sport of the World Air Sports Federation.
”Right now, the industry is facing critical shortages in aircraft production, mechanics,
engineers, and pilots. We are
working hard to build a national youth sports program that immerses students in aviation.
But before all of this, we had
to design a professional grade drone that was suitable for World Cup play and the
needs of the modern engineering
classroom”, said Maj. Kyle Sanders (Ret, USAF) Vice President of Development of U.S.
Drone Soccer.
This one-of-a-kind program was brought to Modesto by Dr. Vickie Mulvaney-Trask, MJC
Dean of Workforce Development
and Community Lifelong Learning in partnership with Tony Lomeli, Modesto City Schools
Director, Student
Support Services.
MJC will host five additional Drone Soccer camps this summer for students 12-17. Sign
