Music Department offers variety of fall concerts
Music is in the air at Modesto Junior College! The MJC Music Department invites the campus and community to enjoy the following concerts:
The MJC Jazz Band Fall Concert is Monday, November 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center on East Campus. The performance by the 17 member Jazz Band, conducted by Director of Bands Erik Maki, will feature music by Maynard Ferguson, Alan Downey, Edward Heyman, Victor Young, Frank Mantooth, Davis, Ramirez, Sherman, Dominic Spera, Tom Kubis, Kupka, Castillo, Garibaldi, Lerner and Loewe. The event is free, with donations gratefully accepted.
The Symphonic Band Fall Concert is scheduled for Monday, November 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. The program, conducted by Erik Maki, will include performance of Canzonetta by Elliot Del Borgo; Rush and Alleluia by Samuel R. Hazo; A Jubilant Overture by Alfred Reed, and The Legend of Alcobaca by James Sochinski. The event is free, with donations gratefully accepted.
The MJC Community Orchestra’s “JurClassic Park” Winter Concert is Tuesday, December 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. The Orchestra, directed by Professor Anne Martin, will perform Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 - The Little Russia, Concertino by Cecile Chaminade, St. Louis Blues by W. C. Handy and In the Steppes of Central Asia by Borodin and Highlights from Jurassic Park by John Williams. Tickets are $5 general admission and $1 for students of all ages and seniors and will be for sale in the Auditorium Lobby beginning 90 minutes prior to the performance.
The MJC Community Band will off a Fall Concert on Wednesday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. The program, conducted by Erik Maki, will include performance of The Fairest of the Fair by John Philip Sousa; Take Off by David Weinberger; Carnival Overture by Anton Dvorak/arr. by Leigh Steiger; From Every Horizon (A Tone Poem to New York) by Norman Dello Joio; Oberon Overture by Weber/arr. by Hindsley; El Camino Real by Alfred Reed and Masque by W. Francis McBeth. The event is free, with donations gratefully accepted.
The MIDI Griddy Electronic Music Concert will be held on Wednesday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall on East Campus. The concert features original electronic music compositions created by students from the electronic music classes and the Electronic Music Club. The music is created using synthesizers, computer-controlled synthesizers, samplers and digital effects. David Dow, Electronic Music Studio Director will also perform an original electronic composition. Concert admission is free.
“The Night Before Christmas – Family Holiday Concert” is set for Saturday, December 5 at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium. The MJC choirs and guests will present a family friendly program of traditional Christmas music, favorite children’s songs, a musical setting of the poem “The Night Before Christmas,” and excerpts from The Grinch movie! The community is invited to a night of seasonal music featuring guest performers from several local children’s groups including the Juline School of Dance, YES Company, Suzuki Strings and more. The Grinch and Santa Claus will visit with children following the show. Tickets are $6 general admission and $3 for students, seniors and children, and are available in advance at the Auditorium Box Office, 575-6776, 12 noon to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and beginning 90 minutes prior to the performance.
