All Campus Buildings have fire alarms that have been monitored and maintained by Campus Safety personnel over the years. Campus Safety is currently converting the alarm monitoring to an off-site alarm monitoring company. Campus Safety personnel still respond to all alarms. Campus Safety personnel also monitor, maintain and respond to security and intrusion alarms on campus.
Dispatch Center and Security Equipment
The department operates a full-service emergency dispatch center located at the Campus Safety Operations center on West Campus. The center is staffed 24 hours a day by both full-time and part-time employees. The dispatch center also houses monitoring equipment for the college's fire and intrusion alarms, as well as our camera system. Please note that our camera monitoring equipment is used for evidentiary purposes only.
Delivery of Emergency Messages
The Emergency Locating Service offers students the ability to leave an MJC telephone number with family members, child care provider, or employers in case of an emergency. The Locating Service tells MJC where the student “should” be. If you have provided your schedule by submitting the Emergency Locator form and Campus Safety is notified that someone in your family is injured or ill, Campus Safety will make every effort to contact you in your regularly scheduled class. Emergency Locating Service Forms are available in the Student Development and Campus Life Office, located inside the East Campus Student Center, next to the Cafeteria. Without an Emergency Locating Service form on file, a message cannot be delivered to a student.
Campus Safety Officers will assist with the unlock of vehicle doors and battery jumps for those with an Annual (A), Term (T) or Student (S) permit on campus or near the campus. Vehicles displaying a valid day pass (from the permit dispenser) must be parked on campus property to receive this service.
YCCD requires all new employees to undergo fingerprinting for criminal history background
checks. An individual who is to be employed or volunteering in Child Care Departments,
or as a Custodian, or in the Campus Safety Department, or if they have disclosed a
misdemeanor or felony, must clear fingerprinting and background checks prior to beginning
work. MJC Campus Safety provides the initial processing for Live Scans at Modesto
Junior College. Go to either Campus Safety office during normal business hours to
complete the necessary forms and to pay for the Department of Justice background check.
See the LIVESCAN Information link or More information is available in the New Hire Packet.
Campus Safety is the official clearing house for all property that is unclaimed, abandoned and/or lost or found on campus. Found property should be turned into Campus Safety at either campus within twenty-four hours. Found property may also be turned into any member of the Campus Safety staff. If you've lost something, don't hesitate to inquire by phone at 575-6351 or in person at the Campus Safety office on either campus (requires proof of ownership and picture ID). After one week, unclaimed property that was turned in at the East Campus Safety counter at Journalism 150 may be moved to the West Campus Safety office at John Muir 151 for storage. After that, found property maybe claimed at Campus Safety office on the West Campus only.
Campus Safety is taking positive action to minimize the risk of theft and to help ensure the return of stolen property should a theft occur. Operation ID has proven to be a deterrent to the potential burglar or thief by assuring that stolen property can be identified by the police as your belongings. Bring your items (bicycle, laptop, iPad, eReader, etc.) into Campus Safety and you will be able to register your equipment and mark it with your driver’s license. If it is stolen, you have a much better chance of getting it back.(more on this)
Parking Services and Enforcement
One of the duties of the MJC Campus Safety Department is to monitor, maintain and enforce parking on campus property. Except in Visitor and Disabled parking areas, parking fees are required and the YCCD Parking and Traffic Ordinances are enforced 24 hours per day. No parking fee is required on Saturdays, Sundays, college holidays, or exempt days. All other parking regulations are enforced at all times. Parking permits are required for vehicles parked on college property. Student permits are not valid in faculty/staff parking areas (except with a disabled permit). Semester Permits can be purchased at the East Campus Business Office; and daily permits are available in Day Pass Machines ($2.00 cash only) in most parking lots. Citations are issued for violations of the parking regulations. (Campus Maps and Parking FAQs)
