Monday Memo July 5, 2012

March 13, 2015

Tomorrow is the first of our New Student Saturdays for 2015 and even the president’s office has been fielding calls from interested prospective students and families. There is certainly greater awareness of the value of having priority registration in comparison to last year. Our team has done a great job preparing for this event and the large number of people that it will bring to campus!

Baccalaureate Degree Pilot -  On Monday, Dean Bettencourt and I will be in Sacramento for the noon Board of Governors meeting and official announcement of the pilot colleges. At this meeting, twelve programs including MJC’s respiratory care proposal, are being presented by Chancellor Brice Harris for consideration by the Board of Governors.

Honors to the Honors Program – Five MJC students were accepted to present at the Annual Community College Honors Research Symposium at Stanford University. While only 42% of all applicants were accepted, 100% of the MJC applicants were selected to present at the symposium. Congratulations to Jenna Castellanos, Kelly Dailey, Alex Golikov, Jody Strait, and Wyatt Bennett and their faculty mentors Talitha Agan, Eileen Kerr, Chad Redwing, Mary Swier, Jason Wohlstadter, Bill Anelli, and Al Smith. Special thanks and congratulations to Professor Eva Mo who serves as the Honors Program Coordinator.

PTK All California Academic Team – Kacee Clyne, MJC nursing student, was selected to the Phi Theta Kappa All-California 2015 Academic Team. This honor recognizes outstanding scholarship demonstrated by students from California’s community colleges. Dr. Cheryl Williams-Jackson, advisor of Beta Mu Theta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society at MJC, noted that Kacee is very active in PTK where serves as vice president and motivates others toward volunteerism in support of the local community. Congratulations!

Outstanding Woman 2015 – Congratulations to Kaye Osborn, adjunct instructor of American Sign Language, who is recognized as one of Stanislaus County’s Outstanding Women of 2015. Kaye is an active volunteer in our community and Delta Kappa Gamma. You can read the Modesto Bee article here.

MJC Men’s Basketball – Congratulations to Head Coach Paul Brogan for the academic excellence demonstrated by the 2015 Men’s Basketball Team. The young Pirate team has an average GPA of 3.62!

The recent edition, February/March 2015,  of Community College Journal  focused on student success and completion. You can read the articles here, and a quick quote below!

We have gone from dog paddling toward student success,

and sort of swimming in isolation, to thinking about our

student success initiatives more along the lines of

synchronized swimming.
