MJC Dairy Judging Team wins big at two competitions

The Modesto Junior College Dairy Judging Team won 1st High Team Overall at The BIG E - Eastern States Exposition Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, September 16 in Springfield, MA, and 3rd High Team on Monday September 19 at the Pennsylvania All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, PA.

MJC’s team members for both competitions were Heidi Omlin, Caroline Lee, Nicole Sanders and Anneka Jacobi.  MJC’s team coach is Bill Hobby, professor of agriculture.

September 16 turned out to be one of those extra special days where everything the MJC team touched turned to gold! Competing at the Big E, they measured up against some of the best dairy teams in the country and beat out a field of four-year institutions that included Virginia Tech, Oklahoma State, Cornell, Ohio State, Penn State and University of Southern New York.

“The fact that we beat out all these four-year, agricultural powerhouse universities is a phenomenal achievement for our students,” said Professor Hobby.

Ten schools (two-year colleges and four-year universities) had the opportunity to compete for honors. MJC team members captured 1st High Individual awards in six breed categories, as well as four 2nd High Individual awards in these competitions.

The Big E contest features two collegiate divisions and the students judge five different dairy breeds and give oral reasons. During the contest, students placed ten classes of four dairy cows/heifers representing each of five different breeds of dairy cattle and present two sets of oral reasons.

The Pennsylvania All-American Dairy Show provided six two-year-colleges the opportunity to compete. The show is the largest junior dairy show in America and features top dairy cattle from through-out the United States. Michigan State Ag Tech came out on top followed by Southern University of New York and then the Modesto team.
