Modesto Junior College partnered with the Institute for Evidence-Based Change (IEBC) to transform MJC into a Caring Campus. This initiative is based on research that
shows, “students who feel more connected to their college are more likely to be retained,
persist from semester to semester, and complete their academic goals.”
In 2023, select MJC Classified Professionals attended IEBC-led coaching sessions to develop and implement plans intended to foster a culture of caring on our campuses. Five behavioral commitments were created then implemented beginning Fall 2023. These have come to be known as our five Positive Practices.
Our Positive Practices are a promise to use specific actions, language, or visual cues to help our students feel welcome and cared for. Please join us in implementing these Postivie Practices and making MJC a more Caring Campus.
Wearing name badges helps to identify employees and makes finding help easier.
Acknowledging and interacting with our students on campus or making ourselves available to assist students.
Taking time to transfer students to appropriate services either by personal escort or providing clear information and materials to help them navigate campus.
Educating and informing staff of new or updated departments and responsibilities to help direct students to the appropriate services.
Create a first impression where students feel welcomed to campus, cared for, and respected.
MJC Caring Campus advocates to create a student-centered environment where positive, intentional, campus-wide behaviors influence student engagement, connectedness, and academic success.
We want our students to know they are cared for, they are supported, and they belong.
