Federal Student Loan Collections to Resume May 5, 2025

Starting May 5, 2025, the U.S. Department of Education will resume collections on defaulted federal student loans. On this date, the Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) will also reinstate the Treasury Offset Program, which is administered by the U.S. Treasury Department. This program allows the government to withhold federal payments—such as tax refunds and Social Security benefits—from borrowers in default.

Within the next two weeks, all borrowers in default on their federal student loans will receive an email from FSA containing information on how to contact the Default Resolution Group. Through this group, borrowers will have the option to make monthly payments, enroll in an income-driven repayment plan (IDR), or sign up for loan rehabilitation.

FSA has stated that it will launch a comprehensive communications campaign to ensure borrowers are aware of their repayment options. This will include outreach via email and social media, where borrowers will receive information on available resources, including extended servicer call times.

Detailed information to help borrowers get out of default is also available at StudentAid.gov/end-default.
