MJC is excited to share how the new AB 928 Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act and AB 1111 Common Course Numbering (CCN) will simplify the transfer process for students. These new measures, mandated by California State Assembly Bills 928 and 1111, improve the students' experience by streamlining general education options, clarifying transfer pathways, and making it easier for students to achieve their academic goals.
This page serves as a resource for Modesto Junior College staff and faculty in support of their service to students. This information will help staff assist students in navigating the changes to course naming and transfer degrees brought on by Assembly Bills 928 & 1111.
Common Course Numbering (AB1111)
Student Transfer Achievement (AB928)
The California Community College system is implementing a student-facing Common Course Numbering (CCN) system, as required by Education Code Sections 66725-66725.5 through Assembly Bill No. 1111 (Berman), to be completed by July 1, 2027. This system will create common course numbers for comparable courses across all community colleges in the state, facilitating smoother transfers to four-year institutions and reducing unnecessary credit accumulation. By maximizing credit mobility, the CCN system will enhance equitable transfer opportunities and support student success by helping students build cohesive academic plans, understand course transferability, and make informed course selections. This collaborative effort involves faculty, administrators, staff, and system officials to ensure the best outcomes for California community college students. (Source: ASCCC)

Assembly Bill 928 requires that students who declare an educational goal of transfer be placed on an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) pathway if one exists at your home college. It also requires a single new general education pattern, the California Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC), for students who plan to transfer. This is intended to increase your success and minimize units to completion.
The California General Education Transfer Curriculum (CalGETC) is the single transfer general education pathway for California Community College students to fulfill lower-division general education requirements for transfer and admission to a CSU and UC.
Learn more about the implementation of CalGETC from the Academic Senate of California Community Colleges and the California Community College Chancellor's Office.
The new general CalGETC education pattern (outlined below) will begin in Fall 2025.
