To the ASMJC Student Body,

This formal notification is being issued to clarify the status of the 2025–2026 Associated Students of Modesto Junior College (ASMJC) elections and outline next steps.

Background

  • Voting for ASMJC elected positions took place on April 7–8, 2025, and the electronic vote count was completed shortly after, in accordance with the ASMJC Election Code.
  • On April 18, 2025, the election was not certified by the 2024-2025 Student Senate with the required majority vote.
  • The term of the 2024–2025 Student Senate ended on May 2, 2025.
  • The election was not certified by the 2024-2025 Student Senate before their term ended; therefore, there is no governing body authorized to complete the certification process.

According to ASMJC governing documents, certification is required for election results to be valid. In the absence of election certification:

  • No newly elected officers may take office.
  • ASMJC is without a seated Student Senate.
  • The 2025–2026 election is declared unresolved, and a new election must be conducted.

Next Steps: Special Election

To ensure continuity of student leadership and compliance with ASMJC Bylaws and Election Code, the Office of Campus Life will initiate a Special Election in Fall 2025, which will include:

  1. Nomination period will be open to all eligible students on the ASMJC web page beginning August 25, 2025.
  2. A mandatory candidate briefing and designated campaign period.
  3. Voting conducted through the college’s authorized election platform.
  4. Certification of election results by an administrative proxy, due to the absence of a seated Student Senate.

While ASMJC Bylaws do not provide for formal interim appointments, Campus Life and Student Learning will establish a temporary student advisory group composed of members of MJC's student body. This group will assist with communication and election planning to maintain student engagement during the transition.

Following the special election, ASMJC will review its governing documents to clarify the timing and process for certification and to develop contingency procedures to prevent future governance gaps.

For questions or more information, contact the Office of Campus Life at campuslife@mjc.edu.  Your patience and continued trust is appreciated as we work to restore the elected student leadership of ASMJC.
