Students who do not have a high school diploma or an equivalent such as a GED are not eligible for federal or state grants.  Please see the options below for establishing eligibility.

Option 1

Take and pass a state-authorized high school equivalency examination (e.g. GED, HiSET, TASC, or other equivalent examination)

Option 2

Military Discharge:  Submit DD214 - Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty

Option 3

If you were enrolled in an eligible program of study in college prior to July 1, 2012, you may be eligible if you meet the Ability to Benefit (ATB) criteria.  To use this option, you can become eligible through one of the ATB alternatives:

  • passed an approved ability-to-benefit test, OR
  • successfully completed at least six credit hours or equivalent course work toward a degree or certificate (you may not receive aid while earning the six credit hours)

Follow the instructions below to determine if you qualify under the ATB requirements to establish eligibility for Federal financial aid:

a)  If you attended an eligible program prior to July 1, 2012 at MJC or at another institution and have successfully completed 6 or more college level credits (Note: PE and remedial coursework is not acceptable):

  • Request the MJC Student Financial Services office to review your academic transcript(s)
  • Submit official academic transcript from prior college(s) if college credit standards were met at another college

b)  If you did not previously attend an eligible program at MJC or another institution, but prior to July 1, 2012, declared a major in an eligible program and registered for courses in that program at MJC:

  • Request the MJC Student Financial Services office to verify your registration date and credits earned if college credit standards were met
  • Submit official academic transcript from prior college(s) if college credit standards were met at another college

c)  If you passed the Ability To Benefit test administered by MJC or another eligible institution

  • Submit a print out of your passing test scores.  These scores may be accepted if you were enrolled in an eligible program prior to July 1, 2012.

Note: MJC offers a GED preparation program. For more information, contact MJC Adult Education Program at (209) 575-6301 or email Yesenia Pugh at pughy@yosemite.edu.
