Week-long Celebration Honoring First Gen Students

The MJC Success Team invites MJC students to a special week-long series of events designed celebrate First-Generation College Students! During the week of November 4th MJC will be hosting a series of workshops, panels, and social gatherings aimed at empowering first generation students on their college journey! Grab a snack and refreshments at any of the events. 
 
This is a fantastic opportunity to build community, share stories, and gain resources that can help students thrive in college and beyond. We encourage all first generation MJC students to participate in as many sessions as possible. Don't forget to RSVP!

Monday, November 4th

Get Involved on Campus - School of Language Arts & Education
11am  - 1pm | East - Forum 110

  • Come learn the different ways you can get involved on campus. Listen to other students’ personal experiences of how getting connected has helped them during their time at MJC. Guest speakers include Campus Life, ASMJC, and Student Ambassadors among other student groups.

Transferology 101: Demystifying Transfer for First-Gen Students - School of Behavioral and Social Sciences
2pm  - 3:30pm | East - Forum 101

  • Working with students who identify as first gen on a transfer focused workshop. The aim would be to encourage students towards the opportunities in transfer and demystifying the process. Representatives from UC Merced & CSU Stan State will be present!

Tuesday, November 5th

Navigating College Life: Mental Wellness Strategies - School of Fitness & Health,
SEM and Kinesiology, Public Health and Athletics

12pm  - 2pm| East- Forum 110

  • Students will gain a deeper understanding of mental health and wellness awareness, resources and self-care strategies. Partnered with MJC Health Services. Resource fair tables include: El Concilio, Center for Human Services, West Modesto Community Collaborative, Pride Scholars, Health Services, TRIO Programs, and Active Minds.

First Generation Scholarship Workshop- School of Agriculture
2pm  - 4pm| East- AG 126

  • Assisting AG majors with scholarship forms and understanding the submission process. A writing tutor will be available to assist with essays.

 

Wednesday, November 6th

Vision your Success - School of Arts, Performance and the Humanities
11am  - 2pm| East- Arts Building Quad Area

  • This event involves creating vision boards for students to help them visualize their success in college and beyond, particularly within APH majors. It aims to counter negative perceptions about these degrees being "meaningless" or less financially rewarding. A panel of first-generation staff and alumni from MJC will be present to address these concerns.

Orientation: You Should Know! - School of Industry and Trades, and Public Safety
3pm  - 4pm| West- Sierra Hall 211

  • Orientation aimed for Industry and Trades or Public Safety majors on key information that will help them be successful during their college journey. 

 

Thursday, November 7th

Financial Literacy: Understanding Student Loans- School of Business & Computing
12pm  - 1pm| East- Forum 110

  • This workshop is focused on student loans. As a first gen student, you may not be aware of the types of loans or the responsibilities of having them. Learn from our MJC Loan Specialist about the differences and how to make informed decisions.

Friday, November 8th

First Generation College Student Day! 
10am  - 12pm | East Campus Quad 

  • National First-Generation College Student Day is celebrated on November 8th. EOP&S, TRIO SSS, and Student Services are partnering to celebrate YOU! Grab a tasty treat while learning about the unique programs and resources designed to support your academic journey. Connect with fellow students and staff, discover valuable opportunities, and celebrate the achievements of our First-Gen community. Don’t miss out on this chance to indulge and engage—your success story starts here!
