The California Motorcyclist Safety Program Motorcyclist Training Course is designed
for beginning and experienced motorcyclists. The course introduces the fundamentals
of safe, responsible motorcycling. Experienced riders can also benefit by learning
safety skills, as well as the convenience of taking the riding test on our smaller
motorcycles to earn the DL389 certificate.
If you have not used Zoom before, the program will ask to load a small application on your device. You do not need to pay to use Zoom as a Motorcycle Student for this class. Desktops, laptops, phones and iPads will work. A device with video camera and audio MUST be used. No exceptions!
The Zoom password will be sent in a separate email the evening before or on the morning of class.
Payment is due in full at time of registration. No spots will be reserved. If you are under 21 years of age, you must call our office at (209) 575-6063 to register. You MUST have a valid ID or passport. A high school ID is acceptable. The fee is less for anyone under 21 because the state requires anyone under 21 who wants to ride a motorcycle to take this safety course. A parent or guardian with valid ID must accompany any minor (15 1/2 - 17 years old) to first range class to complete paperwork. No exceptions!
NOTE: A new law beginning January 2011 - CA AB1952 - requires a person under 21 years of age to complete the course before being issued a motorcycle instruction permit. The law requires the permit to be held for 6 months before a Class M motorcycle drivers license is issued.
If you are 21 or over, you can register online on the Community Lifelong Learning class website or over the phone at (209) 575-6063. Select a class by clicking on Add to Cart and complete the registration process. A profile must be created to complete the registration process. Registration and payment does not guarantee a DL389 Certificate, you must successfully complete all portions of the class.
IMPORTANT: Do not register if you are not able to balance and comfortably ride a two-wheeled bicycle.
In order to receive a refund, minus a $20 processing fee, you must contact our office 7-days before your class begins. If you contact us within 7-days, your class begins, you will not receive any portion of the tuition or credit for a future class.
If you are late to any portion of the class for any reason, you forfeit the entire course fee. To reschedule, you will need to call the office and pay the full tuition rate. Students who are unable to pass the skills test the first time may be eligible to retake the skills test within 60-days at no charge. Students who want to repeat the course must register and pay for a new class.
Yes, we provide the motorcycles that you will use on the range portion of the class. They are Honda Rebel 300, Honda CBR300, Honda CRF 300, Kawasaki KLX230, Kawasaki KLX230SM, and Kawasaki KLX300SM. Can I use my own motorcycle? No. It is the policy of the Modesto Junior College Community Lifelong Learning Motorcycle/Scooter Safety Training Course to use only MJC motorcycles as training bikes. Due to increased liability issues we do not allow students to use their personal motorcycle as a training bike.
You could participate in the course by reserving our Ruckus scooter or using your student-owned scooter. Special requirements apply when using your student-owned scooter. You must call the office in advance at (209) 575-6063. Read Special Notice before registering. If approved to use your scooter, you must come a half hour early on Saturday to have your scooter checked out for safety. You must bring current registration and copy of insurance. If you are going to get a motorcycle license only (you do not have an automobile drivers license), DMV will require you to also take a road test.
M1 license = motorcycle & scooter
You will need one of the following: a government-issued photo ID, or a highschool ID if a high school student does not have a drivers license.
Students are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to bring a DOT approved, 3/4 or full-face helmet. We provide helmets for range classes. On the days you ride, you will need to wear heavy jeans, a long sleeve shirt that covers the wrists, eye protection (can be sun/eyeglasses or visor in helmet), full finger leather gloves, and heavy boots that cover the ankle (hiking, riding or work boots).
NOTE: No one in a CMSP class may display threatening, obscene, or inappropriate messages on clothing or helmets. You are responsible to review and understand the information - including the clothing requirements. If you have questions regarding your clothing requirements speak to the instructor on Thursday evening Zoom lecture - that way if you need to get a different type of clothing you will have time before your Saturday class.
All students must attend the two lectures, two ranges and be on time. If you are late to any portion of the class for any reason, you forfeit the entire course fee. To reschedule you will need to call the office and pay the full tuition rate.
Yes, class is subject to cancellation due to low enrollment, bad air quality, and extremely hot or stormy weather. You will be notified by phone if the class you are registered in is cancelled. You would have the option to be transferred to the next available class or receive a full tuition refund to the form of payment when you registered.
Once you successfully complete the course, our office will process the paperwork, and mail you a certificate within 7 business days. You will take the certificate to the DMV and it may waive the riding skills test.
If you do not pass the course the first time, you could possibly retake the course, or portion needed, at a reduced cost within 60-days.
Upon successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate of completion (DL 389) that will waive the skills test at DMV. You will still need to take the DMV written test to get your license.
