Micro-grants For Students

The Pirate Microgrant idea began when a good student started going downhill in class. This caught the attention of the instructor, Sam Piersdorff. After some discussion, the student needed a one-time emergency fund in order to get things back on track and return attention to their studies.

Criteria

  • One-time emergency situation (e.g. flat tire, broken glasses, crashed computer, stolen bike)
  • An amount between $150 and $300
  • Any individual can refer one student per year
  • Any student can receive one Pirate Microgrant during their time at MJC
  • Students must be referred by faculty or staff and the application form submitted to the Foundation
  • Students may not request Pirate Microgrants

Faculty & Staff Programs

In the spirit of the student Pirate Micro-grant, where there is a one-time need for a group of students, faculty, staff, or programs may apply for a Pirate Micro-grant.

This support from the Foundation is designed to enhance experiential learning, facilitate student group interaction with the community, assist faculty or staff in providing students with an educational enhancement, etc.

Criteria

  • One-time situation that cannot supplant department or program funding
  • Must be for a group of students and align with strategic directions of the College and the Foundation
  • An amount up to $250 for a food purchase* or $500 for a programmatic event
  • A faculty, staff or program may receive one grant per year
  • May not be used for conferences or travel, individual efforts, class parties, or single students

*Food purchases are subject to review and will be an allowance of funds only-purchase, ordering, pick-up, etc. are the responsibility of the requesting party
