"Resilience is the currency of the future."

A message from the Vice President of Instruction.

I heard the above at a recent leadership conference I attended with ten MJC faculty and administrators. These words were later echoed by keynote speaker Dr. DeRionne Pollard, who spoke convincingly of the future of community colleges: “We must intentionally design our colleges for resilience, not to react to change. Our colleges are being called to navigate seismic demographic shifts, economic realignments, political tensions, and the accelerating force of technology. And these challenges lie in extraordinary opportunity, to reimagine how community colleges serve students and society and to lead transformation across the higher education landscape.”

Then, in Resilient by Design: The Future of America’s Community Colleges, a national report that outlines the forces shaping community colleges and the opportunities ahead, it becomes even clearer that the future belongs to colleges that innovate and stay relentlessly focused on student and community success. To thrive, institutions must demonstrate clear value, strengthen partnerships with employers, modernize teaching and learning, and meet students where they are—academically, technologically, and in terms of basic needs.

This work underscores something deeply aligned with who we are at Modesto Junior College: resilience is not just a trait for us—it is our constitution.

Here at MJC, we are already answering the demands of the present and future. We are expanding our dual-enrollment partnerships, strengthening workforce pathways, exploring new methods of measuring student outcomes, and addressing the rising needs of adult learners and working students. We are also engaging more deeply in conversations about AI, short-term credentials, career-connected learning, and new program models that reflect today’s economic realities. These efforts reflect the spirit of redesign the report calls for. In other words, the resilience and innovation discussed up and down the state are deeply aligned with our mission and our values at MJC.

Resilient by Design calls on community colleges nationwide to embrace a bold vision: to help students become resilient learners and adaptable workers by becoming resilient institutions ourselves. This aligns deeply with our mission and our values at MJC.  Your work every day makes MJC a place where opportunity is real and where transformation happens.

As I heard this message from the conference speaker and identified with the sentiment, I wanted to report back to all of you as a way of saying thank you for contributing to this reality.

Onward!
