MJC Community Education offers summer camps for children
Are you looking for activities to keep children or grandchildren busy during the summer? Modesto Junior College Community Education is offering 11 children’s camps during June and July. Fees include all materials, supplies, snacks and a camp T-shirt. All camps are held on MJC West Campus, 2201 Blue Gum Avenue in Modesto, with check-in and check-out at the Wawona Child Care complex.
Although several camps have already filled, the following camps have space available.
The Little Hero Training Camp for ages 5-7 is scheduled June 6-9, 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and the cost is $129. Campers will discover the traits and abilities that make them special and a “superhero” as they create stories, art and crafts, and costume elements to take home. Children will learn about courtesy, fire safety, avoiding danger and local community heroes: police, fire and rescue.
The Time Machine Adventure Camp for ages 7-9 will be held June 13-17, 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., with a cost of $129. Students will help build a time machine and be transported 200 million years ago to the days of dinosaurs to excavate and build a model dinosaur and learn about volcanoes and comet theories. Campers will also visit ancient Egypt, Medieval Europe, the Wild West and the Fabulous 60’s.
A Kids’ Theater Camp for ages 8-12 is set for June 20-July 1, 1– 4:30 p.m. and the cost is $259. In this 10-day camp kids take to the stage in "We Are Monsters!" – a musical that follows human kids into a cabaret filled with quirky monsters, discovering along the way the importance of friendship and celebrating the attributes that make us different and unique. Participants learn about acting, singing, dancing and comedy as they prepare for a Thursday evening performance, and then celebrate their success with a Wrap Party on the final day.
The Physics Kids’ Camp for ages 8-12 is scheduled for June 27 – July 1, 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. with a cost of $159. In this hands-on camp, students discover the forces in physics that effect different modes of transportation and use what they learn to build a glider, design a car, and discover the best way to propel a boat. They will also learn about rockets, and test principles of physics in outdoor play.
The Wild Side Kids’ Camp for ages 8 – 12 will be held July 11 – 15, 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and costs $129. Campers learn about wild, strange or unusual animals and discover answers to questions such as why does a duck float, how do chameleons change color, and how many eyes does a bee have? Participants learn about the creatures that share our planet through fun, hands-on activities, arts, crafts, challenges and games.
The Wheee - Made By Me Camp for youngsters 4-5 years old is scheduled July 18-22, 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and costs $129. Children discover the little artist within during themed learning activities. The campers experience messy masterpieces, clay creations, fun with food, arts and crafts. They will be inspired with unique and artful outdoor activity time, and an art show is held on the last day of camp.
