Supplemental Instruction

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic assistance program that targets historically difficult courses. SI sessions are regularly-scheduled, informal, peer-led review sessions in which students compare notes, discuss assignments, develop organizational tools, and predict test items. Students learn how to integrate course content and study skills while working together.

How SI works:

The SI Leader attends course lectures, takes notes, reads all assigned materials, and conducts three to five out-of-class SI sessions a week. The SI Leader is the "model student," a facilitator who helps students integrate course content and learning/study strategies. It's almost like having a best friend who has already aced the course - from the very same instructor! Thirty years of research shows that students who attend SI sessions receive consistently higher grades. For more information about Supplemental Instruction, please contact the Tutoring Center.

Current subject areas served by SI:

Math, Chemistry and Anatomy are subjects currently served by the SI Program at MJC. In the class schedule, SI sessions are identified by a star symbol below sections offered as SI.

Who Are the Tutors?

MJC tutors are students who have successfully completed the same courses they are tutoring. They received either an A or B+ in the class, and have an overall GPA of 3.0 or above.

MJC tutors attend at least 10 hours of training seminars/assignments to gain instructive skills to better assist you.

Over 95% of our tutor pool is established through faculty referral.

Tutors possess valuable information regarding what professors expect and can show you what to focus on. Every semester many students come back to thank their tutors and other staff members after they pass a class that was initially hard for them.
