Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who is eligible for StartSmart?

StartSmart is designed for new MJC students who have never attended college, or returning MJC students who have not yet earned a degree. Students who have already earned an associate, or a bachelors or higher degree are not eligible for the StartSmart program.

2. If I am already taking MJC classes as a high school senior, what should I do?

First, make sure you complete MJC's assessments. Check out the MJC Testing Center website at http://www.mjc.edu/assessment and choose a date and time to come to MJC to complete the English/reading (or ESL) and the math assessment. Testing is available at many local high schools. Contact your MJC recruiter via your high school counselor for more information. Second, make an advising appointment (after you test) with an MJC Counselor (575-6080) and discuss your options. Make your appointment as soon as possible so that you can work out your first semester educational plan. You will register as a continuing student. Third, make sure you update your high school graduation information with the MJC Admissions Offi ce by completing another MJC admissions application.

3. How can I satisfy the assessment requirement?

You can satisfy the StartSmart assessment requirement by (1) taking the MJC English/reading or ESL AND math assessment; or (2) by submitting other California community college English AND math assessment recommendations; or (3) by submitting other college transcripts that show completion of equivalent English composition and math courses.

4. Need Special Accommodations?

Accommodations for students with disabilities can be arranged for any StartSmart workshop if the request is made at least 10 days prior to the service or activity. If you are being served through the Disability Services Program, phone 209-575-6225 or TTY 209-575-6863. If you are not currently being served through DSPS, phone the ADA Coordinator at 209-575-6267 or TTY 209-575-6863 to arrange accommodations.

5. What if I took assessment tests at another college?

MJC will accept placement recommendations from assessments taken at other California community colleges. Results must be received in the MJC Records Office at least 10 days before you attempt to make a StartSmart reservation. Remember the math and English assessment requirement must be completed before you can make a StartSmart reservation.

6. Why should I attend StartSmart?

One reason is that you will be able to register before many other new students. Rather than registering in August during new student registration, you will register in July when more Fall classes are still open. Another reason is that many staff will be available to help you during StartSmart - counselors and faculty will help you choose classes. Registration assistants will help you work out a schedule and assist you with registration.

7. What if I am a returning student and I already attended an orientation?

The StartSmart program has been designed for new students; therefore, only students who complete assessment, and the StartSmart orientation and advising workshop will be provided with an updated registration date and time. As a returning student without an associate degree or higher who has already completed an orientation workshop, you are welcome to complete the assessments (if you haven't already done so) and attend one of the StartSmart workshops so that you receive the benefit of registration assistance and an earlier registration date and time.

8. Can I attend StartSmart if I have already earned an Associate, Bachelors or higher degree?

No! You are not eligible for this program. The StartSmart program is designed for new students who are just beginning their college education.
