MJC Colleagues,
On behalf of the Student
Learning Outcome Committee I am soliciting your
participation and support in the SLO trainings held this
fall.
You will recall that the
new 2002 Western Association for Schools and Colleges (WASC)
has stated in the new academic standards:
The primary purpose of an ACCJC-accredited institution
is to foster learning in its students. An effective
institution ensures that its resources and processes
support student learning, continuously assesses that
learning, and pursues institutional excellence and
improvement. An effective institution maintains an
ongoing, self- reflective dialogue about its quality and
improvement.
In the most recent
Accreditation visit the team made the following
recommendation:
“The team recommends that
the college develop, implement, and assess student
learning outcomes to ensure student success in courses,
programs, certificates, degrees, and services and use
the assessment and analysis for the purpose of
improvement.”
Student learning is our
primary and central purpose at MJC. Every MJC employee
is here in some way to help facilitate student learning
– whether directly or indirectly.
These Accreditation
Standards remind us that, in order to ensure our efforts
are consistently meaningful and relevant to student
learning, we must maintain a culture of ongoing and
systematic inquiry into the effectiveness of our
activities. Since student learning occurs in response
to any combination of our services, facilities,
instruction, or operations – and external forces beyond
our direct control, we must adopt an ongoing cycle of
self-evaluation to identify and respond to factors that
impact student learning for the purpose of improvement.
In spring, MJC will take a
fundamental step toward employing this process. We will
do this through participation college-wide in a “pilot”
project where teams of individuals from various areas of
the college will work together to identify what factors
are affecting learning and success at MJC. Through this
project we will demonstrate that we are responsive to
the WASC recommendations in that we place
student learning at the
center of our decisions and actions. I
encourage you to investigate how your participation in
this pilot will be beneficial to your students and your
area of expertise. Your efforts will be essential to
demonstrating to WASC that we have made progress in this
area.
The SLO Committee has developed a comprehensive
training program to aid the institution in adopting
these methods for the purposes of improving learning. In
the weeks ahead you will participate in several training
session through your division, department or program
meetings. These college wide trainings are essential to
engage the total college in the dialogue, discussion and
implementation of SLOs. You will also learn more about
the pilot project referenced above. For more
information, please visit the
SLO website or contact
Letitia Senechal, SLO Facilitator.
