Physical Education

The Physical Education program at MJC offers a balanced approach of theory and activity based upon the individual interests and needs of the student. In addition to a wide spectrum of physical education activity classes, MJC offers adaptive physical education courses. The majority of career opportunities in Physical Education exist for students completing a bachelor's degree. General education and transfer courses are carefully planned so that students are well prepared for individual career needs and upper division college work.

Recreation

The need for leaders in Recreation is expected to increase with the demands of a maturing society. Most jobs in recreation require a four-year college degree. Students in he Recreation major at MJC are encouraged to follow the transfer pattern for the four-year college to which they will transfer.

Health Education

The field of Health Education will expand as the need for trained professional in public or community agencies increases. Health Education usually requires a minimum of a four-year degree. Health Education majors at MJC are given an introduction to health through basic health, safety, CPR, and EMT classes. The unprecedented growth in expenditures for medical care caused by new, larger, and more complex health care organizations will create an increased need for health education professionals.

Athletics

Students at Modesto Junior College can pursue rewarding experiences through participation in sport. MJC offers 21 intercollegiate sports - 11 for men and 10 for women. MJC became an official member of the Big 8 Conference on July 1, 2007. Members of the Big 8 Conference include Diablo Valley College, Sierra College, Sacramento City College, American River College, Santa Rosa Junior College, Cosumnes River College, San Joaquin Delta College and Modesto Junior College.

MJC offers men's athletics in football, water polo, cross-country, soccer, and wrestling in the fall, basketball in the winter, and baseball, tennis, swimming, track and field, and golf in the spring. Women's sports include cross-country, soccer, water polo, volleyball, and golf in the fall, basketball in the winter, and softball, tennis, track and field, and swimming & diving in the spring.

Student Athletes

NCAA regulations require all "non-qualifier" athletes to complete an A. A. / A. S. degree that includes 48 transferable units to be eligible for athletic competition upon transfer to a NCAA Division I school. Student athletes are encouraged to talk to an athletic advisor about requirements in the Physical Education division office.

Sports Medicine

Modesto junior College offers entry-level courses in sports medicine for students interested in going into athletic training or for student athletes and others interested in learning how to recognize and care for athletic injuries. Also included in the sports medicine program is an internship, available to students who would like to receive a hands on, practical education in athletic training. This internship allows prospective athletic trainers to working in the Athletic Treatment Center, and at various practices and sporting events.

Career Opportunities

The profession of Physical Education has many career possibilities including athletic training, coaching, teaching, and fitness training. Recreation majors are generally employed by Federal State, or Local government agencies working as recreation leaders or administrators

High School Preparation

Students interested in Physical Education, Recreation and Health Education should follow a college preparatory curriculum in high school. Students should take classes in:

* Health Education
* Computer Literacy
* English and Written Expression
* Mathematics
* Biological Sciences

1. To earn an Associate in Arts degree, students must complete 15 core units and 5 core option units, plus meet the MJC graduation requirements
2. Courses should be selected with the assistance of a Physical Education faculty advisor.
3. Students interested in a career in Physical Education are encouraged to take a variety of activity classes each semester, thereby broadening their activity skills before transfer.

MJC GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Students must complete a minimum of 60 units with an overall grade point average of 2.0 or better. Students must demonstrate competency in Reading, Written Expression, and Mathematics.

MJC'S Instructional Program

The college offers courses designed to meet many diverse interest , educational needs, and vocational needs of students. MJC'S programs are designed to meet particular goals and may consist of one course or a series of courses leading to an associate degree, a certificate of achievement where students learn technical skills, or completion of the first two years' general education requirements for a bachelor's degree. Students are encouraged to consult with counselors and advisors about their educational goals and career aspirations so that appropriate classes may be recommended.

Transferability of MJC'S Classes to Four - Year Colleges and Universities

Each year, several hundred MJC students transfer as Juniors to four-year colleges and universities to continue their education toward bachelor's degrees. MJC has earned a fine reputation statewide for its lower division preparation. Students who properly plan courses of study are able to transfer as juniors to four-year colleges and universities.

MJC has developed course-by-course articulation agreements with most colleges and universities in California. Because each college has different program requirements, students are encouraged to consult with counselors and advisors to make sure that MJC classes meet the four-year institutions' program requirements.
