MJC Writing Centers:
How We Work
What students can do:
-
Visit the Writing Center well in advance of the assignment deadline
-
Bring an outline or rough draft of their essay
-
Bring their class notes and writing assignment handouts so their tutor can read what the instructor wants
-
Bring all prior drafts of each assignment
-
Read their draft to prepare for the tutoring session
-
Make as many simple corrections as possible before the tutoring session
-
Set goals for the session; determine what they want the tutor to help with
-
Plan to visit more than once per assignment for the most thorough help
-
Actively engage in discussion with their tutor
What tutors can do:
- Talk with students to brainstorm ideas
- Read an early draft and suggest areas for further development
- Discuss techniques for improving focus, organization, and development
- Revise with students to enhance clarity
- Proofread with students to reduce grammatical error patterns
- Not write, type, or edit for students
