MODESTO JUNIOR COLLEGE
VOCATIONAL NURSING PROGRAM
The Modesto Junior College Vocational Nursing Program is approved by the Board of Vocational Nursing & Psychiatric Technicians. Accepted students will complete:
- Classes for four continuous semesters.
- 8 hours of theory and 16 hours of clinical each week of each semester.
At the completion of the program, students are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN examination to become a Licensed Vocational Nurse.
We are not currently taking applications. The next application period has not been determined. If you are unclear of the requirements or prerequisites, please contact Allied Health VN Program. PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
Admission to Modesto Junior College
High School Transcript or GED must be on file in the MJC Records Office
College Transcripts must be from a regionally accredited institution recognized by MJC
Possess a current CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant) Certification
Math, Reading, and English Requirements: The following competencies must be met prior to the program application:
MATH
- Eligibility for Math 70 BY ASSESSMENT PLACEMENT TEST or
- Completion of Math 20, or
- Equivalent, with a grade of “C” or better.
READING
- MJC Reading Assessment (Accuplacer) with a minimum score of 85 or
- MJC Reading Assessment (DTLS) with a minimum score of 12 or
- Completion of Reading 184 or
- Completion of a college degree from an accredited United States college.
ENGLISH
- Eligibility for English 50 or higher BY ASSESSMENT PLACEMENT TEST or
- Completion of English 49 or higher with a grade of “C” or better.

Prerequisite Courses: The following prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade on the transcript prior to the program application deadline:
- MDAST 321 – Medical Terminology with a grade of C or better
- AP 50 – Elementary Anatomy & Physiology with a grade of C or better
- A guidance course – all courses are pass/no pass except for MGUIDE 120 which gives a letter grade
Required Information: A photocopy of your valid CNA certification and a high school transcript showing graduation or a GED. All must be submitted to the Vocational Nursing Program by the program application deadline or will result in not being qualified for the selection process.
VOCATIONAL NURSING PROGRAM SELECTION PROCESS
The MJC Vocational Nursing Program uses a random selection process to select students from the pool of all qualified applicants. Qualified applicants are those who have transcripts on file, a valid CNA certificate, have met required competencies & prerequisites and have a cumulative 2.5 GPA in the following required courses:
- Medical Terminology (MDAST 321) or equivalent course with a grade of C or better
- Anatomy & Physiology (AP 50) or equivalent course with a grade of C or better
- A guidance course – all courses are pass/no pass except for MGUIDE 120 which gives a letter grade
Additional Requirements for Accepted Applicants Only
Accepted applicants will receive a letter regarding the Health Clearance process, CPR Certification, and Drug Screening.
Health Clearance
- A medical history and physical examination completed by a physician, physician’s assistant, or nurse practitioner within 6 months prior to program start date. The physical must state that the applicant does not have any health conditions that would create a hazard to self, employees, or patients.
- Documentation of required immunizations.
- A negative PPD skin test must be obtained. If a positive reaction is obtained, or has previously been obtained, a chest x-ray must be taken unless medically contraindicated.
Criminal Background Check
All students participating in clinical assignments are required by acute care hospitals to:
- Complete a criminal background check and
- Be cleared by the clinical facility to participate in the clinical experience.
CPR Certification
The VN Program MAY offer a Health Care Provider CPR class for all accepted applicants. It is mandatory that students entering the VN Program have a current CPR certification.
Drug Screening
All students participating in clinical assignments must pass a drug screen.

Policy Statement On Denial Of Licensure:
The California Board of Vocational Nursing & Psychiatric Technicians protects the public by screening applicants for licensure in order to identify potentially unsafe practitioners. Statutory authority for denial of licensure is set out in Business and Professions Code. Any student, considering a career in nursing, who has a criminal record, is advised to contact the Board of Vocational Nursing & Psychiatric Technicians for advisement, prior to entering the Vocational Nursing Program.
