Nathan Stark's Bio

Nathan Stark, bass, began his musical training under Dr. Lewis Woodward and Dr. Cherrie Llewellyn at Modesto Junior College. Starting off predominately as a singer in musical theatre productions, he soon switched his vocal interests to opera and the art of classical singing. He has been an active performer in theatre, opera, musical theatre and has been a featured recitalist throughout the United States, Europe, and China. Some of his favorite roles have included Don Alfonso in Cosi fan Tutte, Seneca in L’incoronazione di Poppea, Frank in Die Fledermaus, Colline in La Boheme, Somnus in Semele, and Don Profondo in il Viaggio a Reims. Nathan was also instrumental in helping launch composer Eric Whitacre’s opera Paradise Lost in 2003-2004. He has been the bass soloist for Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Beethoven’s Mass in C Major, Brahms Requiem, Henry Purcell’s Come ye Sons of Art, Handel’s Messiah, and Bach’s Cantata #70. Additionally, he has performed with the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, The Long Beach Camerata Orchestra, Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music Philharmonia Ochestra, The Beijing National Symphony, Pasadena Pops Orchestra, CSU Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Musica Angelica Baroque orchestra. He has performed with the CSULB Opera Institute, Opera Pacific, Center Stage Opera, Long Beach Opera, The Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music Opera institute and The Music Academy of the West. His voice teachers have included Ms. Shigemi Matsumoto, Dr. Lewis Woodward, Dr. Cherrie Llewellyn, Mr. Kenneth Shaw. He has had the pleasure working under the batons of Maestro Andreas Mitisek (Long Beach Opera), John DeMain (Opera Pacific), Christopher Larkin (Music Academy of the West), Mark Gibson (CCM) and has worked with internationally acclaimed vocal coaches such as Warren Jones, Jonathan Churchwell, William Vendice, and Henri Venanzi. Additionally, Mr. Stark has had the pleasure of working with legendary artists such Marilyn Horne, Dolora Zajick, Frederica von Stade, and Thomas Hampson.

In Fall of 2005, Nathan had the extreme honor to sing for the President of the United States, The First Lady, and Mrs. Nancy Reagan at the opening ceremony for The Air Force One exhibit at The Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California. The event would be nationally televised across the country.

Mr. Stark has won several competitions and scholarships in voice, including The Brentwood Artist of Tomorrow, 1st place winner of the Classical Singers Association Aria Competition in Los Angeles, 1st Place winner of the CCM Corbett Opera Scholarship Competition in Cincinnati, Westwood Vocal Competition, Burbank Aria Competition, The Palm Springs Aria Competition, and was a Western preliminary finalist for the Metropolitan Opera Competition, Los Angeles District. He has been a member of the Classical Singers Association, the 2002 award recipient of the Opera Buffs Association in Southern California, the 2006 award recipient of the Pasadena Opera Guild, was a member of the Opera Pacific Resident Artists Ensemble (2004-05), and a member of the North West Young Recitalists Association based in Seattle, Washington. His CD, Songs of Travel and Others, was released in 2005 my Melidbocus Media in Frankfurt, Germany and he can heard as a recording artist for the tenth edition of The Enjoyment of Music by Kritsine Forney and Joseph Machlis.


Nathan earned his bachelors and masters in opera performance at California State University, Long Beach. He is currently in the post-graduate artist diploma program at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in opera performance.
