The Environmental Issues Committee of the MJC Civic Engagement Project is moving once again on the issue of recycling on our campus. One of the steps we can take immediately is to recycle the paper materials we use. Commonly accepted statistics show that we can recycle 75% of our office recyclables and we intend to help M.J.C. do just that.

Mini-bins are small plastic containers that we can attach to our current trash containers. Used by many colleges the mini-bin is meant to take non-paper trash that cannot be recycled by our college at this time leaving the larger regular office bin for mixed paper - all kinds of paper. At this time, there is not a comprehensive system in place with all custodial staff but so far, with the blessing of Tim Nesmith, people have arranged with the maintenance technicians to pick up the non-recyclables (in the mini-bin) every day and leave the regular bin until it's filled with mixed paper. In this way, we hope not to cause additional work for maintenance staff and still keep our offices clear of "dirty" trash.

Contact Doug Smith for use and distribution information on Mini-Bins if you'd like to start recycling here at MJC.
