Theater Department stages “Welcome to the Hotel Paradiso”
The Modesto Junior College Theater Department presents “Welcome to the Hotel Paradiso,” a free adaptation of the French comedy by Georges Feydeau and Maurice Desvallieres, on December 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. and December 6 at 2 p.m. in the Little Theatre of the Performing and Media Arts Center on East Campus, 435 College Avenue, Modesto.
Adapter and director Michael Lynch has reset the play to late 19th century San Francisco when the city was at its most colorful, with characters such as Laughing Sal (immortalized as the automaton at Playland), and Sonora Sam (as a gun-toting gold miner who refuses to pay his bill). During the comings and goings of two couples and incidents of mistaken identity, an affair goes completely awry at the shadiest hotel known in San Francisco's Barbary Coast area. With much running to and fro and frequent slamming of doors, Hotel Paradiso is a hilarious, fast-paced farce.
