Modesto Junior College's Communication Graphics Department has acquired a new Heidelberg press which will enhance students' educational experience by giving them hands-on training with a piece of the latest equipment currently used by local printing and manufacturing industries.
The training on the new Heidelberg press takes place in the second press class, CGR 223 - Printing Presses and Bindery, which is offered this fall on Mondays, 8 a.m. - 12:05 p.m. on West Campus. The 3-unit class, taught by Alan Layne, provides intermediate skills in bindery work and on printing presses, as well as specialty printing production such as foil stamping and embossing. Students learn how to do troubleshooting, maintenance, and planning for printing of multi-color jobs. Students who have already taken the first or introductory course, CGR 214 - Printing Presses and Bindery, or who already have some press experience can register immediately for CGR 223.
New students who are interested in pursuing a career in lithography and printing are encouraged to register for the introductory course CGR 214 - Printing Presses and Bindery before registering for the more advanced CGR 223. The introductory CGR 214 course is also offered this fall on West Campus and is taught by Professor Layne. The lecture portion of the course will be taught on Wednesdays, 1:15 - 2:20 p.m. and a choice is offered for the lab - either 9 a.m. - 12:05 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays or 2 - 5:05 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The three-unit CGR 214 printing class offers an introduction to bindery work, planning, paper cutting, folding, assembling, finish work and packaging. Students will also receive an introduction to the Heidelberg press and single color small offset presses. Students will be instructed in operations and maintenance of feeders and printing units, fundamentals of press chemistry, use of press adjustments to control ink and water systems, and use of offset plates. Students also receive training on the Flexographic web press, one of the fastest growing areas in printing.
MJC's fall semester classes begin August 25 and new student registration is underway. Seats are still available in the Printing Presses and Bindery class and currently enrolled MJC students can register online or by touchtone phone. Anyone who is not already enrolled as an MJC student must first submit an application online at www.mjc.edu or at the Admissions Office on either campus. Class fees are $20 per unit, plus other applicable student fees for those not already enrolled as an MJC student. For more information contact Professor Layne at 575-6335.
