NOVEMBER

11/21 (Friday) Modesto Area Partners in Science (MAPS), Forum 110, 7:30 p.m. "Declining salmon populations, climate change, shrinking rivers, dirty water - can we fix this?" with Tim Heyne, Senior Scientist with California Department of Fish & Game's Tuolumne River Restoration Center discussing the latest research on the life history of chinook salmon and provide insight and perspective on the current state of salmon fisheries in our local rivers.  

11/22 (Saturday) Graffiti Bowl featuring the MJC Pirate Football Team vs. Sacramento City Panthers, 1 p.m., MJC Stadium, East Campus.  $8 admission (no discounts and no passes accepted).  Come cheer on the Pirates - winners of the Golden Gate Conference Title for the second year in a row!  

11/22   "Musical Theatre Excerpts" at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall, free

11/24 (Monday) MJC Symphonic Band Concert - "Fall Fanfares and Flourishes" - 7:30 p.m., Main Auditorium; a concert under the direction of Eric Maki, featuring works for band, as well as some transcriptions of pieces from other genres. Free 

11/26 (Wednesday) Women's Basketball, MJC vs. Las Positas College, 6 p.m., Gym 

11/27 (Thursday)  Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, Tuolumne River Regional Park in Modesto. Annual fun run begins at 9 a.m. with 1/2-mile kids race (13 years and under), followed by 5K run/walk at 9:20 a.m.  Awards, refreshments and drawing follow the race.  Race-day registration 7:30-8:45 a.m., registration: $5 - $20.  T-shirts available to first 800 registrants.  Pre-registered participants can beat the race day rush by picking up their number and shirt the day before the race on November 26, 2 - 6 p.m. in the MJC Gymnasium, East Campus.  Information: http://mjc.yosemite.cc.ca.us/mjcathletics or contact MJC Cross Country Coach Mary Shea at 575-6219.

DECEMBER

12/1 (Monday) Beginning Voice Recital, 7:30 p.m., Music Recital Hall, free. 

12/2 (Tuesday) Community Orchestra Concert "The Great B's" - 7:30 p.m., Main Auditorium, a performance featuring the MJC Community Orchestra led by Anne Martin present a variety of music featuring the Great B's: Bach, Brahms, the Beatles and Bond, James Bond. A piano soloist will be performed by Dr. Yan Yan Chan - $3 General, $1 Student, Seniors and YCCD Staff 

12/2 (Tuesday)  French Movie Night is offering a free showing the the film Joyeux Noël (rated PG-13 (in French with English subtitles) at 6:30 p.m. in Forum Building 102 on East Campus. The movie depicts the World War I ceasefire along the Western front during Christmas of 1914 as told by the soldiers.  

12/3 (Wednesday) President's Holiday Social (for Employees), 2 - 4 p.m., Student Center Fireside Lounge

12/3 (Wednesday) Community Band Concert "Masters: Classic and Contemporary" - 7:30 p.m., Main Auditorium, a performance featuring the MJC Community Concert Band. Under the direction of Erik Maki, the band will perform major works from a variety of musical periods. Free. 

12/3 (Wednesday) Fall Piano Recital, featuring the intermediate and advanced students of Dr. Yan Yan Chan, Music Recital Hall, free. 

12/4 (Thursday) Science Colloquium ~ "Environmental DNA Barcoding of the Sierra Nevada Freshwater Invertebrates,"  1 - 1:50 p.m., Forum 110, speaker is Benoit Dayrat, Ph.D., UC Merced, School of Natural Sciences.  Freshwater macro-invertebrates were sampled from the Merced and Tuolumne watersheds in the Sierra Nevada, and a DNA barcoding approach is being used to evaluate the diversity of freshwater invertebrates at different localities. This work will be extended to the rest of the Sierra Nevada, and DNA sequences produced can be used for future reliable identification of Sierra Nevada macro-invertebrates, and thus enhance monitoring and conservation efforts.

12/4 (Thursday) Ag & Environmental Sciences Young Farmer Holiday Auction, Preview at 5 p.m., auction begins at 6 p.m. 

12/4 (Thursday)  Finals Cram Night, 8 p.m. - 12 midnight, East Campus Library - free and open to all MJC students!  Faculty volunteers and student tutors will be on hand to assist students.  The event will also feature "study music," stretching and relaxation exercises and free food and beverages provided by ASMJC - to keep your energy level up!  Come cram for your finals and have some fun doing it!

12/5 (Friday) Modesto Area Partners in Science (MAPS), 7:30 p.m., Forum 110 "Sound Science: Hearing Health and Cochlear Implants" with Elizabeth L. Roth, Ph.D. discussing the science of audiology, the importance of healthy hearing, and how cochlear implants are enhancing the lives of people with hearing loss. 

12/5 (Friday) MJC/AGO Holiday Organ Recital, 7:30 p.m., First United Methodist Church, 850 16th St, Modesto, free.  Concert features an evening of holiday organ music with guest performers that will help to usher in the holiday season.  (Reception to follow the recital.) 

12/5 (Friday) Intermediate & Advance Voice Recital, 7:30 p.m., Music Recital Hall, free 

12/9 (Tuesday)  Holiday Festival of Choirs, 7:30 p.m., Main Auditorium, featuring MJC's Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, joined by the choir from Pitman High School to present a concert of holiday music.  $5 general, $4 students/seniors. 

12/11 (Thursday) Men's Basketball, MJC vs. West Hills College, 7 p.m., Gym

12/11 (Thursday) An English Choral Christmas, 7:30 p.m., Trinity United Presbyterian Church, featuring the MJC Masterworks Chorus joined by special guest artists - The Opus Handbell Ensemble, to present a concert of holiday music, including selections from Vaughan Williams' Hodie, Bitten's Ceremony of Carols and carols by John Rutter.  $5 general and $4 students/seniors. 

12/12 (Wednesday) TV & Film Showcase, 7 - 10 p.m., Main Auditorium, East Campus - A showcase of the best semester's work from the Department of Television and Film. Free

1/15 (Thursday)  David Myers speaking on "Happiness," 4 p.m. in the Main Auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center on East Campus.  Meyers, a social psychologist at Hope College, will explore the things that do, and surprisingly don't, predict people's feelings of well-bieng.  It's a revealing look at the marks of happy lives, based on new studies that have exploded a number of myths and misconceptions.  The event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by MJC Psychology Department and Worth Publishers.

March 20, 21 , 27, 28 at 7:30 p.m. and March 22 & 29 at 2 p.m.  MJC Musical Theatre presents Oklahoma!, Main Stage Auditorium.  Oklahoma! is a celebration of the American spirit. This classic musical was the first collaboration between Broadway legends Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. The musical is set in the early part of the 20th century when Oklahoma was still Indian territory. The glorious score includes "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning," "People will Say We're in Love," and the title song "Oklahoma!." General $15 / Student, Seniors $12 

3/25 (Wednesday) Film Series -Alumni Showcase, 4 - 6 p.m., Little Theatre, featuring the work of former students of the Television and Film Department ~ Free 

3/30 (Monday) Jazz Concert "No Cure for the Funk" ~ 7:30 p.m., Main Auditorium ~ an evening of jazz music featuring jazz bands form Modesto Junior College: the Day Jazz Band under the direction of Erik Maki and the Evening Jazz Band under the direction of Dan Maas. The program will include a wide variety of styles and moods. It's two concerts in one!  Free

4/8 (Wednesday) Celebration of the Humanities, 7 p.m., Main Auditorium ~ The annual award ceremony honoring student achievements in the Fine Arts. The program includes performances of the award winning entries, free

4/18 (Saturday)  Celebrate MJC Wine & Gourmet Food Tasting, 6:30 - 9 p.m., Gym, $35 (must be 21 or older to attend).  A fundraiser for MJC Athletics, the evening will feature wine tasting with about 10 area wineries and food tasting with about 10 area restaurants, and a silent auction with wine, gift baskets, artwork and sports memorabilia. 

4/19 (Sunday) Intertribal Powwow, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Quad, free.  The event features drumming and dancing representing a variety of Native American cultures, and booths with art, jewelry, crafts and food for sale.

4/25 (Saturday) An Evening with David Sedaris, bestselling author, 7:30 p.m., Main Auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center. Author of Me Talk Pretty One Day, Naked, and Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, will offer his sardonic wit and incisive social critiques and will read from his latest book, When you are Engulfed in Flames.  Sedaris has become one of America's pre-eminent humor writers.  A book signing will follow the event. 5/17 (Sunday) Chanticleer in Concert, 5 p.m., Main Auditorium, East Campus ~ presented by MJC Friends of Music ~ Chanticleer has been called the world's reigning male chorus, by the New York Times Magazine. Based in San Francisco, Chanticleer has developed a remarkable reputation for its vivid interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz, from gospel to venturesome new music. With its seamless blend of twelve male voices, ranging from countertenor to bass, the ensemble has earned international renown as "an orchestra of voices." Named for the "clear-singing" rooster in Geoffrey Chaucer's' Canterbury Tales, Chanticleer was founded in 1978 by tenor Louis Botto.
