Coach Shea enters into her seventh year with the Pirates, with another successful season. This year, the women’s team finished in the runner-up position in the inaugural Big 8 Conference Championships. Kapri Hockaday was named “Big 8 Conference MVP” in the field events and was Nor-Cal Heptathlon Champion. The women finished fifth in Northern California and qualified 10 women to the state meet. Over the past seven years, The MJC Women’s Team boasts numerous conference champions, while Coach Shea has guided ten Nor-Cal Champions. At state this year, Kapri Hockaday highlighted the women’s performances with a second place finish in the high jump with a leap of 5’7”. Also, this year, Coach Shea was honored by her peers as a USA Track and Field assistant coach for the IAAF World Indoor Championships which were held in Valencia, Spain. Coach Shea brings her world experience to her MJC student-athletes. In 2002, Shea coached Delfino Arevalo to the state championship in the 10,000m. Delfino’s time of 30:39 was the fastest in fifteen years at the state meet. Before MJC, while at UNLV, Shea coached two athletes to the NCAA cross country championships as well as guiding her student-athletes to school records in the distance events from the 3,000 to the 10,000 meters. Altogether she coached three individual national qualifiers in track and cross country. In addition, Shea was recruiting coordinator and helped bring in one of the largest recruiting classes in UNLV recent history. One of her athletes, Katie Barto, was named Nevada’s NCAA Woman of the Year. Before her successful four-year coaching career at UNLV, Shea served as Assistant Track and Field Coach at The University of Nevada, Reno (1994-97). While at Nevada, Shea coached a Big West Champion in cross country, two out of the three years at Nevada, Reno. Her athletes broke numerous school records and she developed Angie Fortner-Bestwick who was an NCAA Division I qualifier in cross country and served as the Head Cross Country Coach at UNLV. Prior to Nevada, Shea served as head coach for The University of Toledo. While at Toledo, Shea’s first collegiate coaching job after graduate school, her athletes broke numerous indoor and outdoor school records as well as winning an indoor MAC title in the 1,000 meters. As student-athlete at Michigan State University, a former standout distance runner herself, Coach Shea was the 1987 Big Ten Champion in the 10,000m as well as a two-time All-American and a 1988 Olympic Trials qualifier in that event. In 1987, she earned a spot in the Olympic Festival, representing “USA North.” In 2001, Shea was honored by her peers and was named Head Women’s Junior Coach of the U.S. team that competed in Belgium at The World Cross Country Championships. She is a certified instructor of Level I schools, and level I & II certified. In 1988, Shea earned her bachelor’s degree in Finance from Michigan State and a master’s degree in Physical Education from Eastern Michigan in 1992.
Robert Taylor, III:
This
spring, we are pleased to add Robert Taylor III to our staff.
Robert has extensive coaching experience in the sprints, relays and
heptathlon. His ten years of
coaching youth, high school and junior college athletes will add to the depth of
MJC’s experienced staff. Rob has
played a key role in the creation and promotion of youth track and field teams
in the Central Valley. Over the
past years, he guided 12 national youth champions including a national record
holder in the pentathlon. Under his
guidance, he qualified over 200 youth athletes to the national championships.
Robert also has successfully coached in the community college ranks at
Fresno City College. In 2001, Robert’s interaction was instrumental in the
success of the women’s team who placed second in Nor-Cal and sixth in the
State Meet. He also guided Josh
Norman to the state championship and new state record of 10.17 in the 100m, a
record that was set 25 years prior by Houston McTear.
Robert currently coaches a youth club, the Fresno Flying Cheetahs, who
also have a combined GPA of 3.70. Robert
will be working with the middle distance runners as well as advising the
women’s combined events.
Sam
Young: (Throws-Javelin) Coach
Sam Young brings over 20 years of college coaching experience to MJC. Young, who
also doubles as the Head Football Coach, has been a physical education
instructor at Modesto Junior College for the past 12 years.
He is a native of Porterville, California and a product of the community
college system. He transferred to the University of California, Davis where he
received his bachelor’s degree in physical education. He later received his
Master’s degree in “Sport Performance” from Sacramento State. Young
started his coaching career in football and in track in 1980 at his Alta mater,
U.C. Davis. In track and field circles, Young has also known coaching success.
Over the years, he has coached two State Champions at MJC and 4 ALL-Americans
including a National Division II Champion at UCD.
“I see myself as an Educator who happens to work in the physical
realm,” Young has stated. “ I think everyone benefits by getting involved in
something that is bigger than themselves, and team sports provide this
opportunity for our students.” “
Success can be found in a strong work ethic that is rooted in paying close
attention to detail”. “I’ve been blessed to be able to work with so many
gifted individuals”.” My philosophy is simply to encourage students to be
intense enough to get the job done, but be relaxed enough to enjoy the
journey.” Young is single, and resides in Turlock. He enjoys fly-fishing and
reading detective fiction.
Dick
Nuegebauer: (pole
vault)Coach Nuegebauer is one of the most experienced pole vault coaches in the
Valley. He is a valuable asset to our program and very passionate
about what he does. Coach
‘Nuege’ has community college, four year college and high school coaching
experience. He has been successful
coaching athletes at any level. He
has coached at Hughson, Beyer and Downey High Schools as well as a four year
stint at Stanislaus State. In 1998,
Coach Nuege’s Hughson High School team won the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV
Championships as well as his coordinating the agriculture program at the school.
That year, he was also named Sac-Joaquin section “Coach of the Year”
by his peers. Last year, he coached
Jennifer Robinet, a complete novice to the event, to 11’0" which tied the
MJC school record in the pole vault.
