Head Coach Paul Brogan

Paul Brogan just completed his 6th season as head men’s basketball coach at MJC.  After winning 20 games in 2005-06, this past season at MJC the Pirates won 22 games and ended the season as the 10th ranked team in Northern California and 20th in the state.  The Pirates won both the Napa (87-60 over Consumnes River) and the Columbia Tourney (84-74 over West Valley).  They also finished 2nd in the 12-team MJC tourney losing an overtime heartbreaker to eventual state champion Fresno, and won the consolation championship of the Delta Tourney (73-67 over Merced).

Leading the way for the Pirates was first team all-CVC guards Nathan Clark and Benny Koochoie.  Clark was second in the state with 114 3-pointers made and led the team in scoring at 16.5 ppg. (17.8 in the CVC).  Clark was also earned the coaches association scholar athlete award for Northern California.  Nathan signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for University of California, Davis.  Koochoie led the CVC in scoring at 18.9 ppg. (15.6 overall).  He also averaged 5.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. Benny signed with Point Loma University in San Diego.  Two other sophomores will continue their education and basketball careers at universities.  Center Andy Siverly will attend Oregon Tech while Danny Moulyn will attend Humboldt State.

Prior to arriving at MJC, Brogan was the head coach at  his alma mater, Manteca High School where the Buffaloes averaged 20 wins in his last three seasons while they made the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs every year.  A local product Brogan played basketball at MJC from 1985 through 1987.  After MJC, Brogan had a very successful career at CSU Stanislaus.  At Stanislaus he was the Northern California Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player while leading the warriors to the NCAC championship, NCAA Division II Western Region championship, and a berth in the Elite Eight.  He played for current University of Pacific coach Bob Thomason as a junior and current Lassen College athletic director John Jones as a senior. Brogan still holds numerous school records, including career 3-pointers made and the Warrior Arena single game scoring record.

Brogan earned his Bachelors Degree in Physical Education and his Masters Degree in Education from CSU Stanislaus and has been married for twelve years to Jennifer (formerly Barnwell).  Jen is a counselor at Downey High School in Modesto.  Paul and Jennifer have two children – Troy 5 and Brooke 3.

 

Assistant Coach Steve Rocha

Steve Rocha just finished his second season at Modesto Junior College, after assisting at CSU Stanislaus.  Prior to assisting at Stanislaus, Rocha coached for five years in the professional league in Portugal.

Rocha was born and raised in Modesto and is a product of Modesto High School where he was All-Northern California while leading the district in scoring. He played two years at MJC before earning a full basketball scholarship to the University of San Diego.  After college Rocha played basketball for fourteen years in Europe – one in Germany and thirteen in Portugal.  During his time in Portugal, he played on the Portuguese National team for ten years.

Rocha has a degree in Business Administration from the University of San Diego and currently farms almonds locally while working on his Masters Degree in Physical education.  Rocha speaks fluent Portuguese and has visited 40 different countries.  He has one daughter – Caterina 13.
