What is Passport to College?
In this early-outreach pilot project between MJC and Modesto City Schools, 5th grade students at Franklin, Orville-Wright and Fairview elementary schools have the opportunity to enroll in the Passport program in the 07-08, 08-09, and 09-10 academic years. Students and parents will be offered academic and support services at the K-12 school sites and will visit MJC annually to learn about the college programs. Students will also be referred to the MJC TRIO programs, AVID and other support programs as they progress through grades 5-12. Other planned activities include: participation in the annual "wear your college logo" days, college in the community events, conferences, fieldtrips, mentoring/tutoring in the classrooms and more.
The goal of the program is to increase the college-going-rate of students through early outreach. The program starts as early as getting 5th grade students into college-readiness activities and programs on the MJC campus. The program provides follow-up as the students move forward to high school and into college. It's never too early to have students start thinking about college.
