Student poetry contest offered at MJC and entry is free!

Modesto Junior College is holding a student poetry contest entitiled “Poetry for the Mind’s Joy” as part of a national poetry initiative launched by United States Poet Laureate Kay Ryan and the Library of Congress in conjunction with the Community College Humanities Association. The contest is open to all students currently enrolled at MJC.

RECOGNITION FOR WINNING POETRY:

• The First Place poem will be submitted by MJC to the national Poetry for the Mind’s Joy contest.

• First Place winner will be invited to read his or her winning entry at “An Evening with Kay Ryan” on Saturday, April 10, 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of the MJC Performing and Media Arts Center.

• The first, second and third place winners will receive free entry to this exciting MJC event, as well as an invitation to attend an informal poetry question and answer session with Kay Ryan that afternoon prior to the main event (tentatively scheduled for 4-5 p.m.)

SUBMITTING AN ENTRY:

  • Only students currently enrolled at Modesto Junior College may enter and only one poem per student will be accepted. The poem and title must be typed and fit on one page using 12-point font.
  • An entry form must be stapled to the poem and must be completely filled out and signed. Click here to download an entry form or pick one up in the Literature and Language Arts Division Office, Founders Hall - 275A (Second Floor)
  • Submit entry to the Literature and Language Arts Division Office, Founders 275A, by the contest deadline of Monday, February 22, 2010 at 5 p.m.
