Modesto Institute for Continued Learning offers classes for senior citizens
Modesto Institute for Continued Learning (MICL), a community of lifelong learners affiliated with Modesto Junior College, invites senior citizens who are looking for a fun learning program to explore the schedule of not-for-credit classes being offered for the 2009 Fall Semester.

The semester-long classes include Strength Training, Travel, Speech Arts (Toastmasters), Writers' Workshop, and Friday at the Movies. Five-week classes are also offered in three sessions during the semester and these include classes on Leonardo da Vinci's Paintings, Tai Chi workouts, The Past Century: The Fifties, Bird Watching, What in the World, and Aprendiendo Espanol - Traveler's Spanish.  Classes are held in the MICL classroom, Building 6000 on MJC's West Campus, 2201 Blue Gum Avenue in Modesto.

MICL's aim is to provide an invigorating learning experience of physical, mental, and social opportunities. In addition to the classes, members are invited to take part in potlucks, daytrips to places of interest, and monthly birthday lunches. Learning new things keeps the brain healthy and young, and MICL classes accomplish this while remaining fun and stress-free because there are no attendance requirements, exams, or grades!

Registration for the semester is $40, payable to MJC, with no limit on the number of fall MICL classes this covers. Parking permits are $10 for the semester and a $10 donation to MICL is suggested to help cover basic supplies. For more information call Community Education at 575-6063, or Jerry Jackman, MICL representative, at 577-5616.

MICL is a student-run program and a nonprofit organization with an elected board of directors and officers. The organization has been holding classes and social activities for older adult learners on the MJC campus for over 25 years and had over 180 participants last year, including many MJC graduates.
