Haiti, Pakistan, New Zealand, Indonesia, Japan, Chile… In recent years, all of these countries have experienced powerful, devastating earthquakes that affected the lives of millions. This has caused many folks around California to wonder whether a similar disaster could occur here. The answer, of course, is ‘yes’. But that only brings up more questions. So, what does everyone “know” about California and earthquakes? Garry Hayes is a geologist at Modesto Junior College who has studied, monitored, and taught about earthquakes for many years. He will discuss myths, facts, and enduring mysteries about earthquakes in the Golden State.
California is earthquake country. How well do you know the ground that you live on? What can we expect from earthquakes in our region? Will you be able to pass a pop quiz on what to do in an earthquake? Will California fall off into the sea? Can psychics predict earthquakes? Does the San Andreas Fault produce all of California’s earthquakes? Does California get the biggest earthquakes in the world? Are we still waiting for the BIG ONE? The answers to these questions may surprise you. Join us to learn more…and maybe ask a few questions of your own.
