Available for the first time for the 2006-2007 school year for first year students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2006, and for second year students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2005. The Academic Competitiveness Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award. It is designed to assist students with exceptional financial need by supplementing other financial aid sources. An eligible student may receive an Academic Competitiveness Grant (AC Grant) of up to $750 for the first academic year of study and up to $1,300 for the second academic year of study. Beginning with the 2001-2002 academic year, two types of Cal Grants will be awarded – Entitlement and Competitive. 2000-2001 high school graduates with adequate “need” and a minimum 2.00 GPA will be entitled to a Cal Grant A, B, or C. GPA, family income and asset ceilings will determine the award. In addition, each year 22,500 Cal Grant A & B awards will be offered on a competitive basis to students who did not receive an entitlement award.
Cal Grant A: Provides funds to help pay tuition and fees at four-year California colleges. Awards may be held in reserve at a community college for up to two years before transfer.
Cal Grant B: Provides up to $1551 for books, supplies, and transportation in first year. Also helps pay tuition and fees in second, third, and fourth years.
Cal Grant C: Assists students with tuition, fees, and training costs for occupational or vocational programs. Selections are based on financial need, vocational aptitude, and enrollment in an eligible program.

These state funded grants are designed to encourage educationally and economically disadvantaged students to attend college. To receive EOP&S financial assistance, a student must have exceptional financial need beyond that covered by Federal financial aid programs and must demonstrate need for academic support services.

Federal Work-Study (FWS):
Provides part-time employment for students who demonstrate financial need. Students begin work after an official agreement is on file with the Financial Aid Office and may not work for more than 20 hours per week, except when school is not in session.
Students must be enrolled at least half-time to be eligible to work under this program.
The Federal Work-Study Coordinator will assist in placing students in jobs on campus, or at off campus non-profit agencies. Pay is currently $8.00 per hour.
CalWORKs Work-Study:
Provides part-time employment for students in the county’s Federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. Students work on or off-campus and are paid $8.00 per hour. This is an opportunity for eligible students to gain on-the-job experience while meeting their TANF work requirements. CalWORKs subsidizes 75% of the student’s on-campus wages. Veterans’ Work-Study:
Provides part-time employment for U.S. military veterans. Separate applications and detailed information are available in the MJC Veterans’ Office, Morris Administration Building Room 104, (209) 575-6017.
Loans are part of a financial aid package that provides an opportunity to defer educational costs by borrowing now and paying later. Interest is charged on the amount borrowed. Interest rates vary each year, and repayment begins after the student completes or finishes school.
NOTE: MJC does not participate in the Direct Loan Program, Federal Perkins Loan Program or any of the Federal Family Loan Programs [e.g. Guaranteed Student Loan (GSL), including Federal Stafford Loan, Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS), or Supplemental Loan for Students (SLS)].
Nursing Loans:
Students in the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program who demonstrate financial need may be eligible for loans ranging from $300 to $2,000 per academic year. Students must meet Nursing Program requirements to be eligible for a Nursing Loan.
Loan repayment begins after the borrower ceases to be at least a half-time student. The payment period may extend up to ten years; during repayment, five percent interest is charged on the unpaid balance of the principal.
