Smart Classrooms

All general purpose Smart Classrooms are equipped with what is described below. The type of equipment available in a Smart Classroom may vary from room to room-not all classrooms will have the same computer model, projector, document camera, etc. Some examples of Smart Classroom equipment* and brief explanations are below:

  • Instructor Console: With the exception of the video projection unit (VPU), the console houses the media equipment.
  • Integrated Classroom Control: There are many different standards for devices used to control the media equipment in Smart Classrooms. Most classrooms include an Extron Media Link Controller which is a push button interface to select power on/off, device selection, DVD/VCR controls, and in some cases, electronic screen controls. In larger classrooms, you may find a Crestron touch panel, which is similar to the push buttons of the Extron controller. Older classrooms have basic on/off and device selection capabilities.
  • Computer (PC): Smart Classrooms are equipped with a computer and internet access. You will need to use your login and password for access to computer use in these classrooms.
  • Document Camera: Similar to an overhead projector, the document cameras can be used to display slides, paper, and 3-D objects using the VPU.
  • DVD/VHS Combo: Available in many of our facilities, the DVD/VCR combo deck allows playback of VCR tapes and DVDs.
  • DVD Playback: All Smart Classroom computers have the capability to playback DVDs.
  • Laptop Support: Most rooms will require a cable connection to the VPU for laptop projection to the VPU.
  • Microphones: Some Smart Classrooms have built-in microphones and some of the larger rooms have wireless microphones and lapel microphones available.

* All Smart Classroom media equipment must be scheduled through our Media Services office. Please call Julie Berg, Media Scheduler, at 575-6100, by 10 a.m. on the day prior to your class or event.
