Job Announcement: Biological Science Technician (Wildlife)

This is to announce that there are two temporary Biological Science Technician (Wildlife) GS-0404-05 positions opening with the USDA Forest Service, Redwood Sciences Laboratory, with work beginning in January 2010. Job location is in McCloud, CA (about 5 miles east of Mount Shasta City). The appointment is a NTE 1 year position, but may be extended for an additional year. See the job description below.
Duties for these positions are to provide new research information on the ecology and management of American martens, on methods to assess their distribution, abundance, population demographic characteristics, and the effects of thinning/fuels reduction treatments on their occurrence. Methods will consist of snow tracking, hair snares, and remotely-triggered cameras. Applicants must be in excellent physical condition, as 90% of the work will occur in the field, under all weather conditions, and usually on steep, off-trail terrain. Applicants must be willing to work alone under these conditions. Specific qualifications required by this position are as follows (please address these specific qualifications in your resume):
1. Working in steep, remote terrain, alone and with others.
2. Navigating off-trail using topo maps, compass, altimeter, and GPS.
3. Familiarity with forest carnivore survey methods, preferably snow tracking, remote cameras, and hair
snares.
4. Experience with data collection and management.
5. Experience operating snowmobiles -- preferably with USFS certification.
6. Skiing experience covering cross-country skiing, especially in back-country situations.
8. First aid training and CPR -- preferably with current certifications.
9. Experience with working in winter conditions, in snow and cold temperatures, preferably with winter
safety experience.

is hiring individuals to work as temporary, seasonal Driver Helpers. This is a physical, fast-paced, outdoor position that involves continual lifting, lowering and carrying packages that typically weigh 25 - 35 lbs. and may weigh up to 70 lbs. It requires excellent customer contact skills and a lot of walking.
As a Driver Helper you will not drive the delivery vehicle but assist the driver in the delivery of packages.
Driver Helpers usually meet the UPS driver at a mutually agreed upon time and location each weekday (Monday through Friday) and typically do not work on weekends or selected holidays. Duration: Approximately 9 months or 1500 hours per year
Duties: Duties include field collection and laboratory processing of fish and invertebrate samples from San Francisco Bay. The majority of time will be spent in a laboratory processing preserved shrimp samples, which includes identification and measurement of specimens. A Scientific Aid will typically be in the field 2-3 days per month collecting samples from a research vessel. During field work, the Scientific Aid will deploy and retrieve various types of fishing gear and participate in the sorting, identifying, counting, and measuring of fishes and invertebrates. Field days can be 12-14 hours long and start early in the morning. The position will also involve driving the boat crew to or from various marinas in the Bay Area, including Antioch, Martinez, Berkeley, and Coyote Point.
Minimum Qualifications: A valid California Driver's License and either:
Education: Equivalent to completion of two years of college with a minimum of 10 semester units in biology or chemistry.
or
Experience: One year surveying, studying, or evaluating fish or wildlife populations or habitats, or working in a chemistry laboratory.
Desirable Qualifications: College course work in ichthyology, fisheries, or zoology. Experience identifying fish or crustaceans. Experience working in a laboratory environment and with microscopes.
