MICL is one of many student-run, life-long learning organizations throughout the country. It was organized under the auspices of the Modesto Junior College Community Education office over twenty years ago. Mature adults are encouraged to participate in classes for the joy of learning. The variety and quality of our classes is exceptional.
All classes are not-for-credit and most have no tests, attendance requirements, homework or books to buy. They are a way to keep our brains exercised and stimulated as we age. We believe our physical health is also important, so we offer the "Young at Heart" exercise program, as well as some Tai Chi prior to class twice a week. Call 575-6063 to receive the MICL newsletter.

MICL has two semesters a year namely, spring and fall. Each semester is divided into three five-week sessions referred to as A, B and C. Registration cost is $40 per semester. This includes classes for all three sessions. There is a $10 fee for parking and a voluntary donation of $10 for miscellaneous classroom expenses.
Classes are held Monday through Friday (with the exception of the holidays and breaks). Monday through Thursday classes are two hours long and run from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon in the morning and 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon. There is a fifteen minute break during each class for refreshments. Classic movies are held on Friday with varying time frames.
There are some classes that are long-time favorites that have become a permanent part of our curriculum. In addition to these, new classes are introduced at the end of each five-week session. Our curriculum members are exceptional at choosing a broad range of subjects that are entertaining, but also offer appeal to the most discerning members. Our current fall schedule can be viewed under "Fall Registration."
We are located on the West Campus in a little area away from the hustle and bustle of the usual campus life, but still within easy walking distance to the main campus area. We are fortunate to have ample parking with spaces large enough to allow easy entry and departure from cars.
Click on this map link to view and print a map of our campus that shows our building.
Traveling on Carpenter Road (by Home Depot) turn West onto Blue Gum Avenue. You will begin to see the campus on the right hand side. Go to the very end of the campus - turn right on Second Street - it is a street that is almost hidden because it is set back from Blue Gum Avenue. It is between the MJC West Campus and the Stanislaus County Juvenile Court. You will see a flag pole out front of one of our District offices. Second Street is right after the district offices.
You will go on second street until you come to another small street - E Street. Turn Right. Continue on E Street until you see two older, wood buildings. The first one you see will be Building 6000 - or as we call it - the MICL (Michael) Building. You will see signs along the way with the MICL logo on them.
You can park on both sides of the building with a MICL parking tag or a Handicapped Parking Tag. Do not park in any spaces marked as "Staff Parking". If you do not have a MICL Parking Tag, while driving in on Second Street, stop at the parking lot, put a dollar in the ticket dispenser in the lot, get a tag. Put this Parking Tag on your dash. You will then be able to park at the MICL Building.
You will not need to have a Parking Tag on August 30 for the Information Meeting.
Our MICL building reminds us of yesterdays, but it has the charm and the welcoming atmosphere that typifies the spirit of its members. You will not find a cold and sterile classroom, but rather walls filled with photos of field trips and new members, weekly schedules in large print, cards for sick members, current community events and racks of information important to seniors. Our classroom is wired for the hearing impaired, and our drop-down screen allows for better vision for our presentations.
We believe MICL is unique, as we consider our students family. Although the quality of our classes is paramount, fellowship and social activity are also high priorities. Refreshments are served at both morning and afternoon breaks allowing students an opportunity to visit. Potlucks and field trips are held on a regular basis. Many students get together on their own to celebrate monthly birthdays or just enjoy a friendly luncheon.
Living in the Central Valley farm area allows access to a variety of fresh produce. Members often share their home grown produce such as apples, oranges, lemons, persimmons, etc.
Some friendships have been formed that have lasted for years. This year we are pleased to have our first 2nd generation family member attending.
Our membership is diverse being composed of professional people as well as others from all walks of life. Somehow we all manage to meld together to become a supportive family group, each sharing his knowledge and talents with others.
MICL members enjoy six field trips a year. These are open to members and, space permitting, their guests. They are offered on a non-profit basis, so the cost is minimal compared to most other travel organizations. Sites take into consideration the physical needs of our members. Those needing wheelchairs must provide their own assistant. A schedule of proposed locations will be posted at a later date. Click here to check out some of the trips we have already enjoyed!
