A popular travel program for armchair travelers and world-wide tourists alike. We travel via slides, videos, pictures and stories from MICL members as well as guest speakers.

B Session
Dance
Coordinator: Pat McCarty
We will discuss various types of dance (Ballet, Modern, Tango, and Ballroom). Dancers and Choreographers will be featured. Videos of dance performances will be shown. If you like dance, come join the fun.

C Session
Latin-American Writers
Coordinator: Betty Boj-Sode
Expand your knowledge of our neighbor nations to the south by hearing discussions by MICL members and Guest Speakers about such famous writers as Gabriel Garcia Marquez (One Hundred Years of Solitude). Isabel Allende (The House of the Spirits), Laura Esquivel (Like Water for Chocolate), Jose Luis Borges, Pablo Neruda, Carlos Fuentes, Paolo Coelho, and others. Videos when available.


Tuesday and Thursday - 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

"Young at Heart"
Coordinators: Arline Wortner, Lila Huff, Doc Wait, Tomie Kendrick, Leonard Olives
A strength training program designed specifically for older adults followed by Tai Chi. You may sit or stand, depending on your physical ability. The program follows the guidelines of the Presidential Fitness Award.

Seven Artists in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D. C.
Coordinator: Betty Boj-Sode
This class will utilize visual material from the National Gallery of Art to explore the lives and careers of seven American artists, all represented by paintings in the NGA. Some of the artists are household names-John James Audubon, Winslow Homer, James McNeil Whistler-but you will be introduced also to less familiar figures like William Merritt Chase. Frederic Church, Thomas Moran and John F. Peto.

B Session
The Past Century: the Forties, 1940-1945, The War Years
Coordinator: Bill Nichols
The Era in Modesto; Treatment of Minorities; FDR; African and European Fronts; Pacific Front; First person accounts from MICL members, show and tell; Home Front; Rosie the Riveter, rationing, recycling, war bonds; Broadway musicals!

C Session
The Past Century: the Forties: 1946-1949, The Recovery

The Era in Modesto; Innovations, Events and Popular music; Give ‘Em Hell, Harry! First person accounts from MICL members, show and tell; Marshall Plan; Urban Growth; GI Bill; Middle East Partitioning; Cold War.

Talk it Out!
Instructor: Bill Nichols
Membership in our Talk it Out! Toastmaster Club is included in your MICL membership, if you care to join us. This class builds confidence through group support. Give us the chance and we will sharpen your listening, thinking, and speaking skills. Plus it is FUN!

Wednesday - 10:00-noon

Gardening
Coordinator: Paula Loeffler
Whether you are an avid gardener or are just searching for ideas to start or to rejuvenate your yard, this is the class you have been waiting for! Members of Scenic Nursery will show us how to create and maintain beautiful yards. They will present numerous suggestions and how-to advice that will help you to care for plants and to make your yard the envy of the neighborhood! Questions are always welcome and will be encouraged.

B Session
Potpourri
Coordinator: Gene Richards
A wide variety of subjects will be presented by MICL members and Guest Speakers. Whatever the subject, your comments and questions will be welcome.

C Session
Travelers’ French
Professeur: Norma Moore
This class will be a summary of previous French classes, an integrated package of knowledge and skills to enhance your French experience. We will not only acquire additional vocabulary but also expand our reading, writing, and speaking skills, with an emphasis on French culture and lifestyle.

Writers’ Workshop
Coordinator: Shirley Irving
Presenter: Martha Loeffler
This perennially popular class is a workshop offering the opportunity to sharpen your skills in a variety of writing , such as memoirs, poetry, short stories, family history or newspaper columns. Our sole intent is to encourage each individual’s skill in a positive and non-critical fashion. Come, join us!

MICL’s longest running class gives members a chance to confront important issues of the day through discussions of news headlines and other media coverage. Here’s your opportunity to be challenged by your colleagues and visiting speakers and to sound off on your opinions about "What in the World" is going on these days.

Book Group: Healthy Aging: A Lifelong Guide to Your Well-being by Andrew Weil, M.D.
Coordinator: Joan Jones
We will read Dr. Weil’s book and have a two-hour discussion group at the end of each Session. This is the eleventh book by Dr. Weil, who teaches future doctors at the University of Arizona. I was a nurse who went on to teach college Gerontology (the study of aging). In 1982, about 26 years before the writing of this book, I taught a new course called "Healthy Aging." I am now several years retired from California State University, Northridge, and really look forward to discussing Dr. Weil’s book with you.

Experiencing Poetry
Coordinator: Virginia Dall
If you have ever wondered how Poets achieve their magic, you’ll want to attend this class where we will focus on explicating several poems each time we meet. That means we will tear apart each poem and explain line by line or word by word what meaning and which poetic devices we can identify. Putting the poem back together again, we’ll demonstrate how sound and sense both contribute to the effect of the poem.

B Session
Microsoft Office-Just Beyond the Basics
Coordinator: Lance Krajewski
Explore Microsoft Office beyond the basics. Learn how to create PowerPoint special effects, insert and manage graphics in Word and Excel, use tables and mail merge in Word, and create macros in Excel and Word. Topics will be adjusted according to the interests of the attendees.

C Session
Avocations
Coordinator: Pat McCarty
What is your passion? MICL members will discuss interests that they pursue, Art, Photography, Travel, Politics, History, Cooking, Collecting, or any other interest. If you have a special passion, please come and share it with others.
