Modesto Junior College was required to cut approximately $2.4 million from the college's 2009-10 budget due to the cuts implemented by the State's Budget revision. The college had been planning and taking strategic steps to meet the expected budget challenge even before the State Budget numbers and cuts were finalized.
MJC budget balancing steps that have been taken include cutting 180 previously scheduled fall classes; putting on hold three full time faculty positions slated to have been filled, reducing some student services, and eliminating all unnecessary travel, supply and equipment expenditures. MJC also expects to reduce class offerings and student services for spring and summer classes in 2010. The bottom line is that MJC students are having difficulty getting the classes and services they need, and they will continue to experience this "class and services crunch" through 2010.
The budget situation has also greatly impacted MJC's ability to serve students with advising and counseling. If you are a new or continuing student seeking to meet with a counselor, please be aware that you may experience long waits or have to come back another day. We understand your frustration, apologize for the inconvenience and ask for your patience during this difficult situation.
College leaders and advocates believe this next budget year (or possibly 2-3 years) will present one of the greatest challenges ever faced by California community colleges and could change the structure of our community colleges for decades to come. As in previous financially difficult times, Modesto Junior College remains committed to serving our students. Through strategic planning and effective communication we will strive to minimize the impact of these budget challenges on our students.
