Coach Mike Girardi returns to head coaching duties of men's basketball at the college level. Mike was the head men's basketball coach at Napa Valley College where he led the team to the playoffs, which happens to be the last time NVC's men's basketball team has reached the playoffs. He also was an assistant coach for his alma mater, Rice University, which won a playoff game against the University of Wisconsin. He left the NCAA Division One men's basketball assistant coaching position to earn his Master's Degree at The University of Kansas, in order to return to the San Joaquin Valley and begin a career as an instructor and basketball coach in the California Community College system.
Mike was a three year starter for the highly ranked Merced High School where he earned All-American honors. He also was named to 1st Team All State and was Most Valuable Player of the Central California Conference. After earning a full NCAA Division One scholarship to Brigham Young University (9th ranked recruiting class in the nation, and preseason ranked #16 in the nation) he returned to Merced after there was a coaching change at BYU and his father, Chuck, was named the Head Coach at Merced College (Mike's late mother, Mary Lou, was the PE and Athletics Division Secretary at Merced College). Chuck was a former standout basketball student-athlete at Fresno State University where he played for Coach Dutch Warmerdam (World Record Pole Vaulter). The two had met when they served in the United State Navy during World War II. Mike led the state's 10th ranked Blue Devils to the Central Valley Conference Championship and earned 1st Team All Conference honors. He went on to play three seasons at Rice University where he started at both guard positions in the Southwest Conference (5th ranked conference in the nation at the time comprised of teams currently in the BIG 12 and Southeastern Conferences). He was a team captain, earned the Coaches Award, and was 5th in the Southwest Conference in 3 point field goal percentage.
Coach Girardi enjoys working at Modesto Junior College where he is also a full-time instructor. He is married to Cristi, who was inducted in to the Merced College Hall of Fame.
