Drug Screening Policy

Students accepted to the nursing program shall complete a “5-panel” drug screening prior to beginning the clinical portion of the A.D.N. program. The student acceptance letter shall provide the date that the drug screen must be completed.

Procedure for screening:

The student will take the drug screening form provided in the acceptance packet to California Occupational Physicians (COP) facilities at 1500 Florida Ave. Modesto, California. There, the student will be given a five-panel urine drug screening.

The student should notify COP of any prescribed drugs or narcotics which may alter the outcome of the drug screening or affect student performance or behavior
The student will provide acceptable medical documentation of prescribed drugs or narcotics
The student shall be responsible for the cost of the drug screening

The drug-screening test includes screening for the following:
1). Amphetamines 2). Cocaine 3). Marijuana 4).Opiates 5). Phencyclidine.

Students who test positive for any of the above substances on the initial 5-panel drug screen will have until one week before the start of the clinical rotation to demonstrate negative results (i.e. no evidence of drugs).

Students who fail to clear the 5-panel drug screen on the second attempt will be denied entrance into the clinical setting and dismissed from the nursing program. Disqualified students should make an appointment for an exit interview with the A.D.N. program director.

Verification of satisfactory results will be honored by all hospitals for the duration of the student’s enrollment in the nursing program if the participating student has not had a break in the enrollment at the college.

Disqualified students may reapply for the program the next semester. Students will need to complete a new program application and will be considered as part of the new applicant pool. Acceptance will be conditional on clearing all health-related requirements, including the 5-panel drug screen. Results of a positive drug screen will be kept confidential to the extent permitted by law.

Process of Clearance
1. The student will receive a drug screen clearance upon receipt of a negative drug screen result from COP. This result will be sent directly to Allied Health from COP Medical Group.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING DRUG SCREENING

Certain hospitals are now requiring drug screening on students entering the clinical setting in addition to criminal background checks; therefore, this has become an MJC nursing program requirement.

The step-by-step process for drug screening is as follows:

1. In your acceptance packet will be a drug screening form. Please fill it out completely before going to California Occupational Physicians at 1500 Florida Ave. Modesto, CA. The phone number is: (209) 572-2114 You may want to call and make an appointment for your drug screening in order to save yourself some time.
2. The cost is $45.00 cash at the time of your drug screen.
3. You will need to list on the form any prescribed drugs or narcotics you are presently taking that may alter the outcome of the drug screening.

It is advisable to bring all prescription medications in their prescribed containers for California Occupational Physicians to review. This will help to provide acceptable medical documentation of prescribed drugs or narcotics. For any questions please refer to the Drug Screening Policy on the reverse side of this form.
