If you haven't applied to the college already, the first thing you should do is to apply to MJC by going online at mjc.edu and clicking on "Apply to MJC."  Follow the prompts.  Then, meet with a counselor on a "walk in basis."  For information on this, call 575-6080.

6. When and how do I apply to the nursing program?

Applications are accepted twice a year.  The application periods are:

August 1st through August 31st for admission in the following spring semester and February 1st through February 28th for admission in the following fall semester.  Applications can be picked up in the Allied Health Office in Muir Hall, room 258V, on West Campus or you may download the application from our website at mjc.edu.  Go to Divisions & Offices, then to Allied Health, then to Associate Degree Nursing, then to Program Application.

Only completed applications will be accepted during the identified application periods.  Completed applications are submitted to the Allied Health Office in Muir Hall, room 258 V.  Official transcripts for prerequisite and general education courses taken at other colleges or universities, plus high school transcripts, must be on file in the Records Office on East Campus.  IMPORTANT:  Students may only submit 1 application (for MJC or Sonora) per application period.

At the time of application, students will be required to take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS).  This tests a student's skills in the area of Math, English, Reading and Science.  A minimum composite score of 67 or higher is required for a student's application to be processed.  It is highly recommended that students review the TEAS study guide prior to taking the TEAS.  Information on the study guide can be found at www.atitesting.com by clicking on "shop online" under products.

7. How are the students selected?

Beginning Spring, 2008, applicants must take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) and pass with a score of 67 or higher for their application to be processed in the Chancellor's Model.  Information on the TEAS will be given to all program applicants.  Approximately seventy students are accepted each semester (60 students from MJC and 12 students from Columbia College (CC).  The Chancellor's Model is used to select students.  The Chancellor's Model scores students in four main categories: 1. Cumulative GPA, 2. Cumulative English GPA, 3. Core Biology GPA (Microbiology, Physiology and Anatomy), 4.  Repetitions of core biology courses (repetitions and withdraws count against a student).

Students who have a total percentage score of 75% qualify for the randomized selection.  Students will be randomly selected from the lottery pool.

8.  What are my chances of being accepted into the MJC Nursing Program?

Each applicant is screened to ensure they meet the program admission standards. Once a student has passed the TEAS, and met the cut-off criteria based on the Chancellor's model, their chances of being selected from a lottery pool is equal to all other candidates.  One variable enhances a student's chance of selection: 1). number of times the student has applied and was "fully qualified."

9. Do you have a LVN to RN program?

Licensed Vocational Nurses who have met the application requirements may be admitted to the LVN to ADN Upgrade Program on a space available basis.  In addition to the nursing prerequisites, LVN Upgrades must have completed the LVN to RN Transition course (Nurse 259) and passed the TEAS.

10. What are the advantages of attending MJC's Associate Degree Nursing program over a four year Bachelors Degree Nursing program?
